Dipped beam not working drivers side

Post by sjgrafx »

Hi,

My driver's side dipped headlight isn't working.
The lamps and fuses have been checked by swapping them with the passenger side headlight and fuse... all lamps and fuses are good.

Where do I go from here? Any help greatly appreciated!

Steve.

Hi Steve, i have a similar problem. Was just about to post a similar question so thought i would jump in!
I failed MOT today, and this was one of the reasons. I had noticed the light was temperamental, but jiggling the bulb would get it working. Apparently the alignment was off though, however i cannot see a way to adjust the alignment on these. I can only assume that by moving the bulb, the difference in angle causes the beam to shift slightly, although it wasn't apparent to me in my garage.
I don't know whether you can get anything from the bulb by jiggling the bulb around?
Taking the headlight out and comparing it with the passenger side, it looks as if the housing where the bulb sits should have some sort of insulating paint on it. Passenger side (that works) has some sort of enamel coating. Driver side seems to have worn away (possibly with all the moving of the bulb).
I'm not sure whether this causes some sort of shorting, which stops the bulb working?
Maybe someone else can shed some light?!
My plan is to try and "paint" some heat resistant insulating paint onto the bits where the bulb sits inside the headlight housing to see if that makes any difference.
Might not have time to try this until Monday, but will update when i have tried it.
Next option is to source another headlight unit, but this seems a bit extreme!
Seems to be one thing after another with these 206cc's!
Cheers
Matt

It won't be the headlight unit. Try the bulb or plug. Will post in more detail from pc as I'm on iphone

Tks Capncol.
I meant to say i would also try a new bulb. Typically i have spares for most sitting around, but not that particular headlight bulb!
Guess i over-analysed the problem?!

Above the headlight unit in the bonnets slam panel is a hole. Through the hole you should see a white nylon cap head screw. Put an allen key in this cap head and turn to adjust beam pattern. On opposite "corner" of same headlight unit is another cap head of the same type. This adjusts it in the other plane. So one is up & down, the other is left & right.
The headlight bulb is an H7 type with 2 terminals ( + & - ) which is why headlight unit doesn't need to be insulated.
Cheers Col.

Brilliant, thanks for that info Capncol.
I have put a new bulb in which has (perhaps unsurprisingly!) put a stop to the intermittent bulb behaviour.
I have half put the front end back on today (after doing discs and pads all round....) but had held off tightening it all up as i wasn't sure whether the 3 bolts that hold it in had much play for moving the unit around.
I will tighten everything back up and see what the pattern looks like and how it needs adjusting following your tips.
Tks for your help.
