The arm is probably the original as I've had the car since 2003 when it was just one year old. It's done over 101K miles and the wear & tear took its toll. I checked this arm a couple of months back and there wasn't any play, ball-joint cover intact and plenty of grease. I replaced the other one about 4 years ago as the balljoint cover had gone.

Luckily it went as we pulled up to the fuel pump and not the 40-50 mph drive via country lanes to the garage! :o

thanks to the AA for saving the driveshaft (he removed it on the forecourt) and getting the car back home so I can fix it.

My 18 year old son was driving ... and he's really careful as he's only passed his test a few months ago. In fact he's not driven that much recently as he walks to his summer job ...

I've been over the wheel with a "fine tooth comb" .. no signs of any bumping or kerbing, so I believe him when he said it just collapsed! The young lady with him was in a serious traffic accident in January and has pins and plates in one foot(!) and she still gets a bit panicky at speed, so he was doubly careful that day.

I think we just put it down to wear & tear ... and I'll get him to pick the numbers!

Now to track down a not too expensive track control arm, but not too cheap either!
