Re: alarm
Not browsed for a while and just spotted this thread. Couple of things to clarify per owners manual (pages 122 and 125 - right at the back).
Internal alarm sensors are not operative when the roof is open or not secured properly - ie latches unlocked.
And deadlocking, according to manual, is first button push, normal locking is second.
The little button next to airbag switch is to allow internal sensors to be disabled with roof up but with window open or person/animal in side whilst locked.

Re: alarm
I know what it says in the owners manual buggy but our car has never worked like that. Whenever I leave our car with the roof down, if I lock the car without using the little button then the alarm goes off within a few seconds of locking it. It is necessary to set the alarm to "external protection only" before locking the car with the roof down. To do this, after you've had the car running, switch off the ignition leaving the key in, press and hold the internal protection button until the warning light comes on and stays on, release pressure on the button then remove the key from the ignition, exit the car and lock it using the remote control. The owners manual is wrong in our case because the internal protection DOES operate when the roof is open, unless you disarm it using the button. The car has been like that since new.
In practice we don't leave the car like that for long if it is in a public area. We always put the roof up before leaving it for any length of time unattended. The only time we'll leave the roof down long term is if the car is securely locked in our garage.

Re: alarm
Not worth the risk in my opinion. It takes such a short time to close the roof, you have to think, is it worth risking damage or even theft? It's very easy for someone to throw things in the car to cause damage, or even steal your tax disc.
I leave the roof down when the car's on our drive or outside my parents house for example, but it's always on view so I know it's safe enough.
