Peugeot 206 cab 1900 cc year 2002 39,000 miles.
The problem ive got is a couple of things im not sure if they are connected but here goes :
1) First time i start it up from cold it wants to cut out
2) Engine warning light comes on and off saying engine malfunction or cat problem or another message.
i have had the car since november 2011on a one month warrenty twice i phoned the car dealers from where i bought it and twice they sent me to there garage where the used a Car Diagnostic Engine Fault Code Scanner Reader Tool on it twice they set it again and ive driven off with know warning lights on. When i start it up in the morning and say it cuts out and i start it up again the warning light comes back on.
I took it to one of the tyre centre's to see if maybe the battery was at fault they checked the battery and the alternator here are the results of both:
1) Battery test result voltage: 12.76v
Start capacity : 68%
Battery unserviceable
360A SAE > 0C
2) Alternator test
Test-result
Ripple ok
Regul: volt: 12.27v too low
Regul. temp < Oo C
Has anyone any idea's ?

Re: Engine malfunction
If the battery is unserviceable then you need a new one. A battery on its last legs will often cause various spurious messages to pop up. Make sure you get the correct battery as they are taller for the 206cc than for the hatchback. If it was me I'd get one from a Peugeot main dealer as I've found they are usually competitive on price, and you'll get the right one with a decent guarantee. Follow the instructions in the owners manual when fitting it.
If you still have problems after that then do be aware that some early 2.0 litre models had problems with their hydraulic tappets. The symptom is uneven running from cold. Sellers of cars with this fault will often warm the car up before a prospective purchaser arrives so that the symptoms are not apparent during a road test. The repair if that is the case is quite expensive. For further information use the search facility on this forum using the keyword "tappets" and you'll find several threads, e.g.

Re: Engine malfunction
Mate that is the exact problem I have currently on a 54 reg 2.0 litre allure. Everytime I start from cold it vibrates like mad as if its going to explode. Now not only does it vibrate but it stall / cuts out and then I get the battery light and it takes ages to kick in. Now as soon as I drive I get engine management fail, Cat fail, Anti Pollution fail, ESR fail.eddie1958 wrote:Peugeot 206 cab 1900 cc year 2002 39,000 miles.

All kinds of mad problems. Daft thing is when I start the engine the ESR fail resets. It had a new CAT 3 weeks ago and back box. IRONICALLY as the second poster stated when I bought it from the dealer it was running so they did warm it for my test drive.
It has been in the garage now for 3 days and today they said it might be a crankshaft. God knows. I have had it for 5 months and getting worse.
Whats annoying is once the engine is warm, it drives fine and touch wood I have not had any other problem.
I hope I can fix it or I will be selling and warming the engine too.
I do have an RAC warranty for 6 months. I am HOPING that if it is part of the engine that should be covered its not exactly consumable like tyres, breaks and exhausts.

Re: Engine malfunction
As I said, the 2.0 litre engine often has issues with the hydraulic tappets. The cure is usually to replace the tappets with those for the 1.8 engine. Expensive I'm afraid.
If it was me, if it hasn't had an oil change recently then I'd try an oil and filter change first, using a genuine Peugeot oil filter and Total Quartz 9000 5w40 Fully Synthetic oil, but if that doesn't cure it then I suspect replacing the tappets will turn out to be the solution.
You may find that the situation gets better when warmer weather returns, as there seems to be more complaints of this type in the colder winter months.
I'm so glad that we went for a 1.6 engine, but that is of no help to you - sorry.

Re: Engine malfunction
Oh its driving me mad now!
It was at the garage 10 days. They changed the crankshaft sensor. I got it back Monday last week. It seemed ok, but still shakey and vibrating on start.
Sunday I stayed out in Stoke. Got into car at 7am and had to defrost as a slight covering of snow.
Guess what engine management light on again, plus Cat Fail, Plus antipollution fail and ESP fail.
Its driving me mad. It has a 6 week old new cat and back box and new coil pack and plugs. (plus last weeks crankshaft sensor)
I managed to limp the 10 miles back to Crewe and got it on drive. Started it later that day and it did the instant cut out and would not restart (sounded as if battery dead if that makes sense)
I managed to limp to work and back last night to dump it at garage. I stopped at Tesco to get milk as I knew I would not have car for days. I got back in the car 5 mins later. The engine management light had gone off and all errors had reset!!!! The car came out of limp mode and full power returned so I left it outside the garage at midnight with all errors off!!!
It also stinks of fuel when driven but they can find no leaks.
Surely this must be a sensor or something totally daft. It is so annoying as it is a great runner when not being daft with no leaks or anything. HELP!

Re: Engine malfunction
Have you suggested the possibility of the tappets to your garage?(as pointed out by GrandadMonkey)

Re: Engine malfunction
Chees guys. I shall mention it. It is still at the garage. Has been since my last post so for 14 out of last 19 days its been at the garage grrrrr. There is a Pug specialist about 6 miles away I wonder if its worth letting him have a look it has to be something stupid but that tappets thing sounds likely. I shall show the printouts to the mechanic. Fingers crossed.

Re: Engine malfunction
have the codes read if it comes back with P300 multiple missfire detected then clean the MAP sensor and change the oil and filter (Total Quartz 9000 5w40 Fully Synthetic) you would be suprised in the difference it would make. having the tappets done will cost over £300 in labour alone without the parts, it is a 5 hour job.

Re: Engine malfunction
Well I got th car back on Friday. He has changed another sensor and he has found a fuel leak from a seal. He has changed both and I have started it from cold after being left overnight for the last few nights and it started and I was able to drive straight off with no issues.
Even drove to Stoke and back with no issue. Fingers crossed its fixed the issue. But fuel leaking from the seal on start was clearly never helping and it has smelled of fuel since I have had it so it would not surprise me if its been leaking and getting worse for the 4 months I have had it.
Fingers crossed.

Re: Engine malfunction
Ladies and Gentlemem yesterday I finally took the Peugeot 206 cc to Randles Peugeot in Stoke and as everyone said they have diagnosed the tappet problem that is wide spread and well know throughout this forum with the 2.0L engine.
Had the car since October 2011 and it has spent half the time off the road. It has the dreaded horrendous cold start and miss fire constantly tripping the engine man, anti pollution, cat fail and ESP fail.
What drives me mad is it drives a dream if the engine warms ok and in warmer weather.
Since October and passing its MOT it was off the road until January and I got my mate to reset the code. I had 5 weeks of ok driving (but paranoid everytime I start the engine from cold waiting for that beep)
Anyway it came on in Jan/Feb in the snow and was abandoned outside my girlfriends. Took it Peugeot and its the tappets £1200!!!
Oh and coz its been left at the side of the road its been lashed with snow, grit and debris so the discs and pads need doing too as I was gobsmacked when I drove it the 1 mile to the garage.
IN TRUE FRUSTRATING STYLE - The 6 weeks its been abandoned in the street i have continued to start and the emgine managment and cat / anti pollution fail errors have come up. Started it one hour before taking it to garage to warm it a little and they were on. Went into the house just to lock up, came back and the engine management and all the errors were OFF!!!!
How in gods name do you explain that. I pretty much told Peugeot it has to be the tappets as everything has been changed. Its had new CAT, Back box, plugs, coil pack, lamba and crankshaft sensor, fuel leak fixed, 2 x services, passed its MOT with no issue, oil changes and more. I kind of hate my car!
