Hi Everyone Yet Another Newbee

Post by carolyn »

Just purchased my long awaited 206cc. Just to say ive waited years for the right colour and mileage. Got it at 9800 miles. Quite a bargain and a lot less than auto trader are advertising it for. Does need a service though. I tried to upload a picture but the files too big. Its the silver allure 56 plate with red and black leather interior. In immaculate condition for its age.

So did you go for a 1.6 manual? That sounds low mileage! Shouldn't need much doing for a service. When was it last done? If 2 years ago or more then just new engine oil and filter and renewal of brake fluid should be enough. Perhaps an air-con service too. At that mileage the spark plugs should be ok, and so should the air filter. The pollen filter can be taken out and shaken to get the dust off it, then replaced if ok. 30 second job.

New engine oil and filter about £40, brake fluid change another £40 ish, and an air-con service (if necessary) about £50.

Make sure you read the owners instruction manual thoroughly as many expensive mistakes are self-inflicted.

Good luck.

Yes its the 1.6 model and the mileage is very low. Thanks for the info.Im not sure whether to take it to a peugeot dealer and get the booked stamped and pay the money for the service or let my mechanic son do it all. Dilemma, maybe i should save money and get my son to stamp the book when hes done it.
Ile probably to the latter as there isnt much service history with it anyway, A service was done Jan 09 so it is due one now.

With a car out of warranty I'd let your son do it as long as he knows what he is doing.

Since the warranty expired on ours I've being doing my own servicing. Saves an absolute fortune and I know the job has been done properly. The only time ours sees a garage is at MOT time for the annual test.

I bought a Haynes Workshop Manual (4613) which is helpful. Less than £15 brand new off eBay from seller motoringbooksofbookham.

I had to bite the bullet and get the car serviced where my ex works at a proper garage. My son couldnt do the work because hes not allowed to bring cars into the garage (works for the PO) and they cant work on cars after work or lunch times and he didnt have to tools to do everything needed where i live. Anyway i did get it cheaper than peugeot would have charged me and the garage gave it a proper looking over and full proper service (and looked at a few extra things that are not in the scheduled service). Like i said the car has only done 10,200 miles now and they said the brake pads are on amber but should last another 6 thousand miles. I didnt pay to change them all but was wondering now if they havnt eveer been changed should i have. The garage said there 80% worn on the rear. But said because it was only advisory dont worry as i dont really drive that far. Maybe my son could do that for me! Anyway im very pleased with the car and it drives beautifully and still feels new.

I certainly wouldn't change the brake pads if they've at least another 6000 miles in them. The thickness of the pads is dead easy to keep your eye on as you can see them through the alloy wheels quite easily.

Minimum pad thickness is 2.0mm and if you're a steady driver using anticipation to ease off the throttle instead of using the brakes all the time your brakes will last a long time. Our car has 24k on the clock and the brake pads are about 1/2 worn. Still on the original tyres too.

Drive fast leaving your braking until the last second and you'll get through pads very swiftly. The choice is yours. The rear brakes do less work than the fronts by the way so shouldn't wear as quickly.

I check ours probably every month when I wash the car as you can see them very easily when you wash the alloy wheels.
