Dear GrandadMonkey.
Hi! This is my first post and I really hope you can help me.
I have a Peugeot 206cc (1.6L 2003 ~42000miles).
In the last two weeks my car isn't starting intermittently. When I turn the ignition, the typical sound one hears happens, but the engine won't catch as normal and the car won't start. Excuse the lack of technical terms (!) but I guess what I want to differentiate here is that it is not the 'clicking' noise which happens when the battery is flat. So I believe that it is different to a lot of the similar-sounding problems posted here and solutions given...the starter motor doesn't seem to be the problem.
When it first occurred, I jump-started it from second gear and it started. I brought it straight away to a garage - the mechanic looked at it, it was starting fine while he was there, and he said it all seemed fine and to see if it reoccurred. Reoccur it did! On the second occasion I had jump leads and tried them but it made no difference to my car, it would not start while connected to the other car. So we pushed it, jump started it out of second gear and it started again straight away doing this. It started fine for the next few days...brought it to another garage...he had it while it wouldn't start and connected it to a computer, which showed no errors. He changed the crank shaft, and told me he went through the connections very carefully but could not find a problem. Apparently both battery and starter motor are fine. He also changed the ring at the ignition (transponder ring I think?) in case the car was not recognising the key, got the part from the Peugeot garage. He said he listened to the fuel feed and it seemed to be fine too and was reaching the engine without a problem (given as a possible solution in another post - believe me, I've read them all out of desperation!). The mechanic said he brought the car to a Peugeot Dealer and they had a gander, but were stumped too. He gave me the car back today hoping the ring would fix it.
I took the car away from this garage this evening, and on the way home I accidently cut the car out in traffic (my fault - the car didn't do it itself.) I turned the key to go again but the same problem happened again. Tried for a second time and it started (this is the first time it fixed itself straight away.)
However, obviously the problem is still there and ready to happen again.
I am really concerned that noone can find the solution, and I have completely lost trust in my car and fear it won't start every time I get into it.
Please, please, please help me if you can, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance!
Val.

Hello Val, welcome to the forum.

I'm sure you'll find the problem is the starter motor itself. I'd replace it with a new one.

Best wishes,

Ron
