Please try and help me! Need all the advice I can get!! I have a W reg 2 litre diesel Peugeot 206. Today i drove from London up to Coventry. At Coventry there was a traffic jam and I was stuck / very slightly moving for about half an hour. All of a sudden whilst stationary the most horrendous noise started from the engine and grew louder and louder to the point where I grabbed my bag, switched the engine off, and jumped out onto the motorway for fear the car was about to explode!!! The noise was so loud that people in cars 3 rows in front of me got out to see what the noise was! The noise lasted about 15 seconds after switching the engine off then it died down. After the noise stopped i heard my engine fan was on. The traffic eventually subsided and i drove home with no problem. Anyone got any ideas what this was all about??!! I recently had the car oil filter changed and new oil put in. Probably had nothing to do with it but i dont really know much about cars! Any help would be genuinely appreciated as Im scared it gonna happen again. Many thanks.

Was it accompanied with lots of smoke from the exhaust?

Hi there. No I don't think was any smoke from the exhaust, but then after I jumped out the car I was at the front rather than the back. There was no steam from the engine either. Just this massive rumble! I drove the car today for an hour on the motorway and it seemed perfectly normal. I remember the temperature guage yesterday being high about 90, do you think it's just a case that the car overheated?

I have the exact same problem with my Peugeot 206 Y reg. It has happened now twice over a 3 month period. The first time it happened I was parked up with the engine running and the second time I was stop start in traffic. Both times it has really scared me as the sound is so loud and seems to come from every part of the car. I have taken it to the garage and explained it to the mechanic who could not come up with a solution. I feel certain it must be the fan because after I stopped panicking and thought about it the engine did appear to be cooling down. He said it would be difficult to diagnose without hearing it. However, I really want to find out what the problem is as I'm dreading it happening again. I paid for a full service, which was due anyway and nothing showed up.

I have started to notice now though if I'm stop start in traffic that the fan is sounding dodgy so I wonder if whatever is wrong is getting worse. I am taking it back to the garage in two weeks for MOT and will ask them to have another look. If they get to the bottom of it i'll let you know.

I have searched on google and a lot of people report the same problem with 206 but no real suggestions for what it could be.

Hello,

I have taken my car to the garage today as the problem became more persistent. Originally the noise happened now and then but over the past week it has happened every time the temperature gauge went over 90c. The noise was not as loud though. The problem was caused by the motor in the fan apparently, it had worn and come loose. Car as good as new now.
