I had this problem on a 106,instead of messing around with the dealer,i just took the pads out and put a layer of copper grease on the back of the pad,NOT ON THE FRICTION MATERIAL.This seemed to cure the problem.I found this out after many years of owning Fords.Hope this helps.

mines have more or less stop squealing for the last week or so - bloody typical as it's booked into the zoo on wednesday :rolleyes:

Booked in tomorrow for rattle in the boot and squeaky brakes.

Rattle stopped last wed and hasn't returned and seeing as there are no success stories on the brakes fix Ive cancelled my appt as I know I probably risk more problems or damage

Derek - have you heard anything on the hoops ?

i would still recommend getting the brakes fixed if only temporary.

mines were stripped down at 3k miles and lasted 7k or 8k till they started squealing again. time to try again

need to carpet fixed anyway and see the dealer about something so am as well to get the brakes fixed again while i am there

Found an old boring motor magazine at work last night. It was from 2001. What I found of interest was several complaints about Peugeot 406 brakes. The basic gist of it was that several people had problems with the brake discs warping / shattering. It was found that the pads Peugeot and Citroen had started to install were far too hard and prematurely wore out the discs. There were some hefty bills to customers that had this issue. The end of the article said that Peugeot were going to be using new pads from then on, but no recall was implemented. Seems like the new compounds Peugeot now use are too soft. Mind you I think Id rather have it that way.

Just a quick Q.

What are your rights when it comes to getting the squealing brakes fixed?!

I only asked because mine need doing again and last time it happened I got so much greif from A) peugeot and B) the dealer as to who was responsible for the cost of the work.

They said I had to pay.
I said They had to pay.

This is a fault that occurs due to the vehicle's parts being substandard/impropper/faulty call it what you like..... so it should be carried out under warranty.

So if they start to quibble again... which I suspect they will, what would you do?!

Last time they eventually agreed that I should not have had to pay and gave me a free service (wonder if they will remember that when the time comes... I only have it in email form.)

on wednesday my dealer said they would only do it under warranty for the first year - fair enough i guess due to mileage/wear etc..

My dealer says it comes down to 3 words _ fit for purpose - if the brakes stop the car then any quibble over sqeaks etc is down to the customer, Peugeot Uk customer relations agree with with this , and only agreed my brakes should be "repaired" once under warranty

I would say to that "the clear purpose of having a cc is to get big chested blonde women to look at me more favourably" and complain that the brakes squealing are undermiming this, and that therefore the car is not ft for its purpose. See what they say

Failing that, you could always tell them that the purpose of mechanics is to fix cars, and the purpose of customer relations is to be nice to customers, and that they, therefore, are not fit for THEIR purpose!

i wasn't at all courteous to the staff when i was in on wednesday. picked fault with every word they said (coz the words they used were the wrong ones) and called the receptionist (she was playing at being thick) a f****** goat.

don't think they were too impressed with me

Well, I guess the answer to the fact that they will only fix the brakes once is to pay for it (although it is painful) and then keep getting them fixed time after time after time on the workmanship warranty that comes with the repair... usually 3 months or 1k miles isn't it?!

Quite simply if they don't repair the squeal I'm gonna sell the car. I also happen to be in a position in the media where I can tell a lot of people my thoughts on the vehicle.

It is a great car and a pleasure to drive.... until I have to press that middle pedal.

No more squeaks:!: It'll take a while before I can brake without wincing, though.

I took mine to Tim Brinton in Cambridge yesterday. I asked them to replace the pads as I didn't want to faff about taking it back in a few hundred miles.

When I went to collect it they said they had just refaced them because replacement pads will squeak in time anyway and the service manager has heard on the grapevine that a permanent solution is on the way in 4-6 weeks time. I offer you this as I heard it, no idea whether he was just fobbing me off.

But at least they didn't mention charging me. (at 13 months old and 6400 miles)

service manager at my local dealership has said the same thing about a fix .... also said related to sticking on handbreak and clunking .. but he also could be fobbing me off
