Right, I'll narrow it down a bit....It took place in the South Atlantic in December 1939. The damaged German battleship put into Montevideo for repairs...
Col, the British liner 'Athenia' was sunk off the coast of Ireland (in the August of that year) by a U-boat (U-30?) A U-boat is not a ship.

The particular battle in question also involved HMS Achilles and HMS Ajax...
Remember its a "Battle" and not just a sinking.

The answer to the question:
Name the two ships that took part in the first 'Battle of the Atlantic' in 1939 was HMS Exeter (rendered a blazing hulk) and Admiral Graf Spee ('impounded' in Montevideo after limping in for repair. Her Captain committed suicide shortly after)
