Not to mention the petrol.

I've got a serious Optimax comparison for you now.

Driving up to Liverpool in my W-reg Fiesta using Tesco unleaded petrol at 60mph took around half a tank (that was a few months ago). Cost between £35-£40 return journey.

Driving up to the West Brom game at the weekend using Optimax (which I've been using for at least a month now) at 70mph took slightly less than half a tank. Cost was around £32-£33 for the return journey.

Also, the engine has seemed a lot smoother recently and there's a little more kick mid-high range - not much, but noticeable every so often. Idling's also a lot smoother.

Net result is, basically, I will be continuing to use Optimax in the Fiesta and will definitely be using it in the Pug when it arrives.

guys the only difference between all of the fuels are the addictives that the various companies put... which REALLY dont make much of a difference at all....I work for a petrol company and believe me the petrol that you put in yr car at tesco is the same as the one in the Esso service station + some addictives .... mind you the deposits where the fuel trucks go to get the petrol are the same ones for all companies... so the petrol is exactly the same! then again if you think some addictives make that much difference to your engine... you are free to spend more money for those Unleaded super extra plus products that r 99% the same as the cheaper basic unleaded

i have just completed my second test with optimax - 5 tankfuls and around £160 each time.

i have went back to normal unleaded - any difference in performance is absolutely minimal and the same goes for mpg.

i would say - defintely not worth 7/8p per litre difference. and as for being so much kinder to the engine - not much to worry about unless you intend keeping your car for it's entire life.

Maybe not, but everywhere I've been, it's not more than 4p difference. Tesco's unleaded round ours is 74.9, Optimax is 78.9 - and as I said, my experience is that on a 2-year old Fiesta which has been run on normal unleaded for 2 years, there is a noticeable difference.

Put it this way - I'm on target for around 340-350 miles from this tankful. I would normally be expecting around 280-300 miles.

I'm not trying to sell it to anyone, just relaying my experience to those who want to know.

As for being just the same as any other petrol, I'm sure Trading Standards and the ASA would be down on Shell like a ton of bricks if it was.

The fact my Fiesta's done around 30,000 miles on normal unleaded may also be a factor. If Optimax cleans the engine like it claims it does, then that may the reason I'm noticing the difference.

alex im giving you some insights... if shell have found an addictive that cleans the engine..... why dont they market it worldwide? my guess is that it's only in UK ;)

I told you, I work for one of those major petrol companies, and the addictives do not make much of a difference, at least as a general rule.

I don't know, and frankly I don't really care. I have told you of my experiences with the product. You can make all the guesses you want but I know what I've seen with my own car.

From their own site, they say "Shell Optimax is a unique unleaded fuel developed specifically for UK drivers." It also seems that they have introduced similar fuels in other countries, obviously with different names.

They have an e-mail address at customerservices@ope.shell.com - if you really want to know why they don't market it worldwide, why not ask them or check their website?

Relevant facts include:

* It has the highest octane rating of any petrol in the UK (>98 RON)
* This has been rigorously tested and benchmarked against other petrols currently available in the UK.
* We have extensive test results which show how removing and preventing the build up of deposits in the engine improves engine performance, and data to prove that using Shell Optimax results in both these benefits.
* Customers in other countries where we've introduced similar fuels have reported fuel consumption benefits.

Anyway, that's the end of the discussion as far as I'm concerned. My car runs better and gets better economy figures. Unless you can prove that my car is lying to me, then there's not much else you can say really.

Well I only fill up twice a month, and I only put around 30 litres in then. I don't think £2.50 a month is going to bankrupt me :-D
