I was getting the anti-pollution fault and briefly for one day, a catalytic convertor fault. Both faults went away and the engine management light is no longer coming on, but the car is mis-firing badly from cold, but it warms up within 5-10 mins and runs perfectly after that.

Took it to the garage and they checked the cylinders, tappets, coilpack and all's fine. I'll drive it around for now, but if it gets worse I think I'll get someone to have a look at the lambda sensors.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration.

It's definitely worth a try fulnic, if the problem ever recurs. As I have mentioned previously in this post, I took the coil pack off and cleaned it and it worked fine for about a week, then the problem came back.

How did they check the tappets?

Not sure, they said they'd found a recorded fault on cylinder 3 so they checked all the tappets but couldn't find a fault.

I suspect faulty lambda sensors would affect the fuel/air mixture causing one of the cylinders to misfire until it warmed up. I'm guessing the lambda sensors help regulate the engine from coldstart in the same way a choke would?
