I had a Merc C Class. Ran it for years without anything going wrong, serviced it myself so the only costs were petrol, tyres, oil, & routine service items. I told myself that if ANYTHING went wrong I'd change it. Got to the stage where a front shock absorber needed replacement, just a £100 job, but true to my word I sold the car and bought a 6 month old Golf estate. Best decision I could've made. The Golf is diesel so does 55 mpg instead of 27, costs 1/2 as much to tax, and so far has cost me nothing in repairs.
Our 206cc is much the same: is 5 years old, has cost just £7 in repairs (reversing light switch), I service it myself. It actually belongs to my wife (her birthday present a few years ago), but if anything major goes wrong it'll go, and be replaced (if my wife is still driving then). Fortunately I'm at the stage of my life when that is possible: kids all grown up, nearing retirement and mortgage finished. There are some advantages to getting older - not many - but the odd one or two!
