hi all,
My Engine Diagnostic light came on the other week. i took it to Peugeot and paid my £40 and was advised that i had an ageing CAT and it needed replacing. They wanted 560 quid for it. and then they said that they will need to check something else (my upper and lower ???? (forgot what it was now))
I took it to kwik fit and had a whole new exhaust on there for £300 (my back box was replaced free under warrenty).
The guy in there said that the light would go out after a few miles, but it is still on.
Is it likely to go out on its own, or does it need to be reset? if its still on does that mean that something else is still wrong and if so, should peugeot do the diagnostic check free of charge this time round?

I wouldn't expect Peugeot to do another diagnostic test for nothing.
You took it somewhere else for the work to be done. Not Peugeot's fault.
I'd take it back to KwikFit if the light doesn't go out as they said it would.

From what I understand the following is true. Check out some of the GTI forums as its a common issue and its where I got the below info. Funny how, if you own a 206 GTI it is generally a fuel related issue, but when it’s a CC it’s a megabucks issue, even though they use the same engine!
Anyway!
If the lamp is flashing then the fault is active and you have a problem. Personally I wouldn’t run the car if this is the case. But if the car engine sounds ok then you could try turning the ignition off wait a couple of minutes turn ignition on and wait for the fuel pump to stop ticking. Then try starting. Generally if it’s a low mileage vehicle the fault is often blamed on poor quality fuel. But it could be many things from a dodgy lambda probe, airflow sensor, wiring, knackered spark plug, ECU, exhaust, catalytic converter, sticking tappets or worse case a broken cam belt. But I wouldn’t trust anyone who straightaway says it’s a costly issue especially if they haven’t suggested it could be something as simple as dodgy petrol.
If the light stays on then the fault has been logged, but it is no longer an issue and so not as concerning. If the light is staying on then I would be pretty confident that the error has gone and its just a case of reseting the diagnostics error log.
Hence if light stays on try disconnecting the battery for a couple of days. This supposedly resets the ECU error log. If this doesn’t work you will have to take it to Peugeot to have it reset for some stupid fee probably another £40. Other alleged fixes is to run the car on BP ultimate or a high-octane fuel until it clears.
My father has a Citroen Picasso that has the same engine as a 206 CC SE and had this issue. Citroen said it was fuel related and didn’t change a thing on his car. It’s not been an issue since and that was about 3 years ago.

thanks for your responses guys.
After a while my exhaust started making a funny noise so i took it back to kwik fit and told them that the light was still on and that the exhaust didnt sound right.
They had a look at said that they are going to replace the CAT and Mid section. So they ordered the bits in and fitted on saturday.
they were supprised that the light didnt go out and didnt know what they could do.
anyways, after driving me car for 150 miles at the weekend, i noticed that the light had gone out (just after i refueled my car).
hopefully thats the end of the problem.
