Rear Discs Worn after 40,000kms

After a mere 40,000kms, I was surprised to hear that the rear brake discs were worn on my 20 month old 206 and needed replacing.

Apparently, this is 'wear and tear' and is therefore not covered under warranty. AND, will cost me in excess of $AU500. (GBP200)

I use the gears a lot when slowing down, so I hate to imagine how quickly they wear out on automatics!

The dealer told me that he has seen rear discs go as quickly as 10,000kms.

Has anybody else encountered this?

I've just had front disks and pads and rear pads on my 2001 CC after nearly 60,000 miles, the rear disks still have some meat on them though and won't need changing for a while yet (although that could be rabbit residue)

Sounds a bit odd. If you are not heavy on them they should last longer than that, usually you can get through a couple of pad changes to 1 disc change. My 206cc is currently on the original set of discs and it has done 55,000 miles (88000kms) and they are still going. Maybe they need replacing due to the surface being scored in some way rather than actually worn out. Scoring can cause the need for replacement.

I changed the front pads on the CC at around 32k miles but the rears were fine when I sold it with around 44k at 33 months.

When I took my car for an MOT I asked about my brake pad wear and was told I had atleast 50% left and had done about 24000 miles at that time. However according to the tester, brake pads are far harder on newer cars and last as long as the discs. So it is not a surprise that you have to change discs and pads at the same time, but if mine last until 50k I will be more than happy as that means no fannying aroung with brakes for another 4 years!

Only trouble with harder brake pads is they seem to cause squeeking on some cars :x

Yeah you are right Andy my front disks were scoured quite badly and I am quite heavy on the brakes.........a little habit I picked up on the racetrack.

Well I was pretty pissed off about it. I have never heard of rear discs only lasting as long as the pads on ANY car.

I don't know how it can be attributed to wear and tear. To my way of thinking, I reckon its more likely faulty materials or maladjustment which is basically faulty workmanship IMHO.

I've forked out the $$$ now so its too late to quibble I guess.

Too many hand brake turns will wear them out quicker

I dunno, im still convinced that my 206cc used to have brakes that stuck on ... this would obviously add to the wear and tear ..., but my brakes always made a clunk after the hand brake has been applied.

So far 307cc no problems ... and not a squeel in site (err ... ear shot?)
