Dagnabbit, the boot lid feels like it weighs a ton, is hard to lift, and won't stay open. I think something hydrolic might have gone inside the opening mechanism. (The electric roof still works fine though, going up and down no problem!) has anyone else had this problem, and might be able to make me look knowledgeable when I take it to city Motors at Sheffield this week?

Hi,
This came up in this thread where there are instructions on doing it yourself - a good idea as the struts are only £29 a pair inc vat!
Mine is an 03 too but not an import so was still covered by warranty when one of them failed, they replaced both under warranty. Sorry to hear about your problems and I hope you get some joy. You could try tackling the dealer, they might make a goodwill gesture, or try Pug UK. There seem to be at least three cases of struts going on this board alone, it could be a manufacturing defect in the strut itself. It could well be that the manufacturer of the strut may replace it for Pug and pay them compensation for the failed part for some time in excess of the warranty. After all, Pug don't particularly want cars coming back with failed parts as it gets them a bad name.
The struts went on my 02, funnily enough just after pug had fixed my roof mechanism which broke in the up position at 10pm on a cold winters night at Ikea (disaster), and my garage bought the parts and were willing to fix it, but say they can't as there is something blocking them keeping the roof up. Is this right, can they only be fix by pug? Anybody fixed their own?
