Hey All,

I recently had the unpleasant experince of discovering that my exhaust pipe had rusted at the joint to the back box and had detached itself.

I was told by Kwik Fit & ATS Euromaster that the replacement parts were only available via Peugeot main dealers. I then had the much more unpleasant experience of being told by my local Peugeot garage that the exhaust could not be replaced without also replacing the catalytic converter (which has absolutely nothing wrong with it) - at a total cost of almost £900, £500 of which is for the cat!

I then looked over this site and found that many peole have had a similar experience, and have dealt with it in generally one of two ways. Either a) find a non Peugeot mechanic to chop the exhaust before the cat and attach a new exhaust, or b) compain to Peugeot about how ludicrous their design is, and seek for it to be covered under warranty.

I chose route b) and told Peugeot Customer services that I was unwilling to be penalised to the tune of £500 for their faulty design, when almost every other car in their range (and every other manufacturer's) takes the sensible approach and has a joint in the exhaust section for easy removal and replacement.

I was told to wait for a customer services manager to phone me back, which would occur within 2 days. That did happen, and when they called they told me that as the part is so unusually expensive, and as a goodwill gesture blah blah blah they would cover the £500 cost of the cat.

Frankly I was expecting more of a fight about it, which suggests to me that Peugeot must have been made very aware by a number of people that such blatant attempts at highway robbery (getting us to pay to replace parts which are not broken) will not stand, and so they acquiesced very quickly.

So the point of this message is to both thank the people who have posted on this subject previously, becuase that helped me frame my argument to Peugeot, and secondly to reccomend to anyone who encounters a similar problem in the future that they should complain to customer services and seek for them to pay for the cat as it seems there is a good likelyhood that they'll say yes.

Best,

Josh

Who did you speak to at Peugeot, I had a running battle with them a few months ago over this same issue and was told in no uncertain terms.........thats the price and there is nothing we are going to do about it.

Then last month I had a customer satisfaction cold call about how the matter was handled, needless to say they didn't fare very well and the local dealer got a bad feedback too.

Hiya,

I'm not sure who the person was that called me to tell me they were going to stump up the cash. She actually phoned whilst I was sleeping and so I was still a bit dozy on the phone.

Sorry not to have that info, but at least being able to cite the case should be some help in future I hope,

Best,

Josh

Well done - the same happened to my sister's CC. Luckily she had two bargaining points:

1) Since the first day she owned the car she said to the dealership that the exhaust didn't sound right
2) They gave her a brand new CC as a courtesy car whilst looking at hers and she point blank refused to return it until her car was fixed under warranty. It was costing the dealer £70 a day on insurance! She also managed to put quite a lot of miles on the clock ;)

Just had a similar experience my 52 206 with 31K on the clock started blowing. Took it in and told that they would check it out could be just back section. Took it off and suprise suprise the middle section had corroded and would cost £900. I said it should be covered by warranty but apparently not. Now in discussions with Peugeot UK. Good to find this website with similar problems.

How do you find the Nissan? I'm looking to trade up, either Boxster, 350Z or Z4

***SORRY FOR THE OFF TOPIC POSTS***

fast, stylish car and pretty rare to see on the roads :)

some of the interior plastics could be of a higher grade but don't really notice them when driving.

servicing costs are very cheap too, first service around £120ish second about £180ish depends on which garage u use.

it's 3.5 litre but still get around 27+mpg on a long journey.

there have a been a few problems (mine's ok tho) here and there but what car doesn't

check out - http://www.350zuk.com/forums/index.php

loads of ex TT,porsche and bmw owners have now swapped to a Nissan 350Z :D

Peugeot got back to me and told me that the one piece exhausts are under a 3year warranty so it will be replaced FOC. Thanks to this site and complaining I saved myself £900, that can go towards my next car, either a Z4 or M3 Conv, definetely not another Pug!

Just had exactly the same problem, rusted joint between mid section and back box. Good news is that it is under 3 years old. Bad news is I bought it as an import, so I guess the 3 year rule does not apply? Anyway, I am taking it into the dealer tonight to see what they say. Any thoughts on where I stand?

The annoying thing is that I new that imports only had a 2 year warranty on them (as opposed to 3), so I purchased an additional year of warranty supplied by 'Autosupport' to make up the difference. However, exhaust systems are not covered by this warranty

If worst comes to worst i guess I will have to follow 'option' B, and get somebody to 'chop' the exhaust to add a new bit in. various posts on the forum describe this being done for IRO £50, but I can't find a garage to do it unless i get the pipe first. Any suggestions on implementation of plan 'B'? I live in Blackburn. Craig has suggested a garage in Rochdale, but something a bit closer would be useful!

I phoned Kwik Fit who said they could replace the whole exhaust inc Cat for about £400. Email Peugeot UK direct and kick up a fuss, its obviously a problem they are aware of.

Yep my exhaust went in exactly the same place right behind the back box, just after I'd signed to part ex it. Dealers wanted £600+ to replace it, so having read all comments on the site I emailed Peugeot customer services from their website. They asked my dealer Braziers of Ellesmere Port to check it and a couple of days later after a push from Dave at the dealers (excellent man) agreed to cough up under warranty. All in all a BIG SUCCESS!!
But there are those of course who don't read the forums and won't know about this and will just pay!
And yes I'm getting another one! But this will I think end up with a stainless steel job in due course. Did notice that the design of the new one has changed slightly although it still seems to produce a lot of water.
