i test drove the 307CC today. driving past my local dealer i saw it wink at me, i'm sure, and of course took the bait as part of my quest to find a more chocolate-labrador-friendly convertible than my current 206.

overall i was pretty impressed. the roof mechanism is far superior to the 206CC and the car had a solid feel. peugeot have obviously taken on board some of the styling faults of the 206CC, e.g. the lowering of the front windows as you open the doors, porsche-boxster style. granted, the pug interior felt a bit cheap and nasty but at least they have lowered the all-seeing driving position of the regular 307. i drove the 2.0 138bhp so no surprises there as the 206CC 2.0 SE has the same unit, the 307 didn't feel as lively however, probably due to the added weight, and would possibly suit more laid-back drivers, burge, say, or lyndon as he approaches middle age.

i only have two main gripes about this car. no matter how i look at that rear end, no amount of squinting or peering gets me away from feeling that it's a chrysler trunk gone wrong. the diode rear lights are innovative, however they would be the first thing that i would mod to try and detract from the very awkward rear angles. parking sensors are an option, but frankly trying to park a bus would be easier methinks.

the second major gripe is that i don't feel it represents a good buy. there are options galore available, but of course most come at a premium. paying £19.4k for the 138bhp auto, say, you get a comfortable middle-of-the-road cruiser (which is what this car is in essence) but i don't feel it's good enough value for money. i wonder what the ungainly renault megane CC will drive like?

the guy i spoke to assured me that aside from dealers desperate to get demonstrators before the renault comes out, there is no delay with supply at the moment. i do think it is worth a look, but that unseemly rump, well. it put me right off innit :|
