I parked up outside the Air Terminal where I work as normal. Mid-morning we had a fairly high ranking member of the Labour Government flying out on one of our jets. Then some bright spark discovers an abandoned suitcase in the car-park about 20 yards away from my car. After cordoning off the area and evacuating the terminal (creating big delays on our flights) they decided to call in Bomb Disposal...
There I was looking at a tasty insurance claim, but unfortunately the term "controlled detonation" means exactly that...
No damage to my car (or any other for that matter) and the suitcase was discovered to be empty. Boo! :x And then the rest of my day was spent playing "catch-up" getting these bloody planes out.... Double boo!!!
Nearly got my pug blown up today...

How is it possible to perform a controlled detonation on something like a suitcase?
I mean no body knows whats inside, right?
What if it was a Nuclear bomb or a really fine gas which killed everyone within 100 miles upon explosion? or do they xray it first?

Oi!Doesn't it show up on radar and annoy the tower? (or did you get it lowered?)
As for the controlled explosion - its quite cool really, they use a robot that looks like Johnny 5 from the film 'Short Circuit'. Can't really tell you how they do it (although if you're sad you can probably find out how to somewhere on the internet - hmm anyone else thinking "Duncan"? )
