IN the boot of my car .. there is a kind of bit of white string with a plastic bobble on the end of it which sticks out of the plastic bit at the top.
Oh thats just a useless description ..
er .. it looks a bit like a bathroom light pulling string thing but only comes out about 2 inches into the boot and seems to do nothing even when I've tried to pull it a bit!
Anyone know what this thing is? Or indeed what I am talking about at all?
I thought it was for holding the cover when removed.
I believe it holds the cover so you can get to the mechanism below the rear screen in order to lower the roof manually. It was poking out on my car about 6 weeks ago. I investigated it a bit and decided to just push it back in. No problems since.
I've used it and, when I'd finished with it, it was flopping about a bit (fnarr) and the roof made a weird clunking sound when going down (fnarr fnarr) - so I tucked it back in and hey presto - silent roof operation! So the moral is, keep it tucked in if you don't wanna snap it off
Thnaks for that post Pauline, my thingy is dangling so I am going to push it back in (That sounds abit rude) hopefully my roof will stop cluncking then

Took it back it or it will snap off as mine did last week - ooh eerr madam.
Seriously though the cord is used to manually shift the mini parcel shelf thingy behind the back seats if the roof is broken. When you open the roof automatically and hear the clunking sound it is because the toggle on the string is caught in the folded roof and as the parcel shelf is flipped back up it tries to pulls the string back in hence the clunking and eventual snapping.
Currenlty waiting for a replacement to arrive at the dealers!
Now you say it. "Clunking noise" My roof was making a noise as the plastic cove flipped over (You know the cover.- The one that flips over at the final point of the roof being lowered). It was this that made me check out things in the boot and discovered the string hanging out. I guess it was a simple case of car PMT.
