If you have windows XP you can stop them altogether.
On the start menu select control panel. Then select Administrative tools. Then select Services. In the menu that appears scroll down to Messenger and right click on it and select properties. Then there is and option to disable it.

It does warn that some programs may not like you turning it off but I am yet to encounter any and now surf in complete peace.
Just tried your fix Andy, seems to have worked

Cheers

COR!

I didn't know this would thread would provoke such a response. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one to be suffering from these bloody annoying unsolicited pop up messanger adverts - strange though that these only appear to have started a few weeks ago for users.

I've followed Andy's advice and disabled messanger, Waiting to see if it makes a difference. I'm also thinking about getting a decent firewall.

Robbie.

People you are missing the point with trying the quick fix, its like leaving your house door unlocked and saying as long as i don't see the person robbing my house that's ok, get a firewall and lock all those doors,
also i can safely say you will have 100 or so programs or services installed on your machines that you don't know about but are constantly sending every site you visit to a central server somewhere, ever wondered why SPAM seems to reflect your surfing habits? well that's why.

If anyone wants the tools to make their PC safer and help on how you use them PM me and i will be more than happy help you set them all up, i've practiced hacking on a controlled network of my own machines (never anyone elses) and i can tell you the results are scary, please please take notice as there are nasty people out there who will exploit your lack of security

Derek - just to recap, these "Messenger Service" popups are NOTHING to do with "MSN Messenger".

Greenday - very well said! Don't wait for your computer to be attacked before fixing it. By then it's too late!

I tried Andy-W's fix and am still getting pop-ups....
Tried to download a firewall with Greendays help last night but it proved elusive. Oh well, looking on the bright side i've lost 3lbs and got a date with a South American transexual!!!

Harrah!

Followed Andy W's advice and no more pop ups. Cheers Andy.

Ahhh - Bliss and peace at last.

CB have you followed Andys instructions carefully enough by clicking the "stop" messenger button then the OK'ing button found within the general tab of messenger properties? If so hopefully you shouldn't be getting any more pop ups.

I regularly run the free "Adaware 6" program to clean out those annoying spyware programs (everyone picks up from surfing the internet) from sending information about me to central servers and therefore inviting spam. I recommend people try Adaware, it really seems to make a difference. I also intend to obtain a decent firewall.

Robbie.

Think you can earn £1000 a week from sitting on your fat lazy bone idle behind? Contact www.idlewaster.co.uk and watch us ruin your pitiful life*** pop-up adverts....

Did you know that http://www.fatbastard.com was a real url when you posted it CB?

I actually found that wine a few years ago in calais (whilt buying 'dogs bollocks' and 'frogs piss') It aint half bad considering its comedy value ;)

By the way, Dogs Bollocks white is OK (a bit cheapy tasting but drinkable) But FROGS PISS is the foulest bottle of wint i've ever tasted!

CB,

AHH - but did you also make sure you clicked the disable button in the messenger "log on" page otherwise messenger will automatically start up each time you log on/start up?
