Any ideas what the symptoms of a knackered fan belt are?

Your fan doesn't go round. Of course, not many cars use fanbelts any more :P

Being serious for a change, symptoms could include the 'battery' light staying on because the alternator's not spinning.

The Ancillary drive belt ("fan belt") drives the Alternator, Power steering Pump, Air Con compressor..

On the 2.0 engine (EW10J4), there was an issue a couple of years ago with it squeeling when cold.. A belt with silicon impregnated into it seemed to help with that..
However because it is exposed to the elements.. Road grime can get stuck in between the "teeth" and cause similar symptoms :(

But if it is broken then you would know about it!
