I also understand you can use veggie oil without any special kit by using a chemical addative supposedly without any lose of power....... but you still have to pay duty on it to be legal. sounds like a lot of effort for not much gain and smelling like a fish and chip van

Interesting idea but it is illegal in the UK to use anything but Petrol/Diesel or approved LPG/gas.
I think someone was pulled over by police only a few months ago for running the car on this.

I'm still waiting for the gadget from back to the future where you add garbage to the top and it fuels the car.

A Delorean would be nice too :D

Biodiesel is legal. Biodiesel is produced when vegetable oil is mixed with an alcohol and a catalyst and the transesterification chemical reaction occurs. The alcohol replaces the glycerin in the vegetable oil molecule to produce a thinner oil and glycerin. The glycerin is then allowed to settle out. It even has its own rate of duty. Whats Illegal is not paying the duty and if you want to break the law I would have though using red diesel was a lot less fuss.

Thanks to http://www.vegburner.co.uk for the info

They tried the veg oil diesel on the last series of top gear and it worked a treat :)

Don't fancy a diesel though :(

Why not?

Modern diesels are not as noisy any more and the top diesels from Seat for example are just as fast and even faster then a 2.0 CC. I drove a diesel for years before this cc, and i still have to get used to stop a the gasstation every other day to fill it up with 45 EUR of fuel.

AFAIK they weren't pulled by the police but by HMC&E. It's not illegal as long as you've paid the duty on it.

It's exactly the same as running road vehicles on marine diesel. That's not illegal because it's the wrong fuel but because the duty hasn't been paid on it (duty on marine diesel's far less than road diesel).
