Just heard a story from my girlfriend. She phoned up Diamond insurance and basically went through the whole insurance process for the 206CC.
They gave her the lowest quote. Brillaint ... lets go for it.
Then we get the small print .. and purely by fluke -- we see the company actually quoted us for 10 MONTHS INSURANCE not 12!!!!
Because she hadn't specifically stated 'I want a year's insurance' their policy appears to be assuming you only want 10. Who the hell wants 10 months insurance not a year?
:x
Well in reality no-one -- but fooled us well enough into presuming they were the cheapest. Goodness knows how many people have fallen for this. 12 months has become so much standard -- it seems to me to be some executive's clever thinking about faking cheaper prices and getting that sale.
Watch out for this one.
When we asked specifically for 12 months insurance their quote suddenly turned very, very average.
10 months is for new driver to build up their no claims cos you still get a years no claims for only 10 months driving, but i agreed with you its all a big con

There is method in my madness though. Elephant.co.uk offer you a choice of 12 months or a '10 month bonus accelerator' which means you pay for 10 months insurance but at the end of it they give you a full years no claims!
It may not be ideal for some but it's excellent for me.
There could be reason in their madness too! After 10 months you'll be looking to renew with 1 years no claims with Elephant or 0 year 10 months with anyone else (which will probably be considered 0 years). Elephant won't have to be quite so competitive in their quote as others will be quoting on 0 years no claims. Having said that you'll probably find brokers that are willing to accept your 10 months as a year to get your business so I'm sure it will all work out in the end! Cheers
I'm fairly sure an 'elephant year's' no claims is a 'standard year's' 'No Claims.'
I would assume all that happens is an 'extra' year is added to your 'No Claims' information on the database of insurer's by elephant.co.uk after 10 months and not 12.
Otherwise, as you rightly pointed out this would cause problems and furthermore get highly confusing if you changed insurers.
I can just see it now:
'and how many year's no claims have you got, sir'
'3 standard years, 20 elephant months minus the 2 months a year I used to get free.'
As I said it may or may not be a problem but I be suprised if Elephant could outright say you had a years after 10 months? You'd be "buying" your no claims and hence not really in the interest of the other insurance companies to honour it? Maybe I can pay even more and get 1 year after 6 months, 6 years after 1 year, etc. etc.
On a different thread when I got my Peugeot I hoped to just amend the details of my insurance from my Alfa 156 (which was more expensive to insure) for the remainding month of my policy. As always seems the case that wasn't possible as the underwritter of my Alfa doesn't do convertibles so I had to take out a whole new policy with no refund on the old. Even more suprising was the first quote she gave me was pretty much the same as the Alfa. It was only after I asked why it was so expensive that she said she'd have another look and knocked £200 off the price. As it happens I got a quote for £10 more from Egg so I went with them just to be arkward!
Anyway, finally, my point! I still had get paper proof of my NCB (9 years)from Quoteline Direct to give to Egg. The computer system you mention I think is more about catching people making up NCB letters than making it easy for you to swap from one insurance company to another!
As I said, at the end of the day I'm sure it will all work out, cheers
egg are losers. due to their extortinate price to move my policy when i got my CC i cancelled it and moved to Axa.
i was due a refund of about £200 from egg and it took over two months and a series of letters by recorded delivery threatening legal action to get my money back.
refunds from eagle star and axa have been made within a week.
i wouldn't use egg again for insurance if you paid me and once i get my mortgage moved to intelligent finance i will be closing my savings account with them too.
i will still use them for credit cards seeing as i can screw them with their interest free offers

My next credit card will be Capital One coz they're giving away a pocket TV worth £80. After that, I'll go for either my 2nd Egg, 3rd RBS Advanta, or might try a new one
