If you by a new plate from the DVLA the process is painless.
You buy over phone with creditcard they send you form
fill in form send to your local DVLA office with tax disk and get new V5 and disk in post. Then all you need is plates.
Transfering a plate may be a little more complicated
You can put old style single letter pre-fix regs on vehicals register with the new style number plates. I've done it.
But there are now regulalions that mean that only the new style of lettering is legal... i think
