I've finally finished my sub box and thought these pics may be useful:

The whole lot's home built as you can see, and sounds pretty good. Just need to get a decent amp and re-run the power wire. If anyone's trying to do the same and has any questions, feel free to ask!

Well the speaker needs 22.6ltr = ~0.8 cubic feet. I originally made it this size but it sounded terrible. Then I realised I needed to add the size of the cone. On the box it says the cone takes up 0.7 which I thought was a bit big, but that's what it says, so I made it 1.5 cubic feet and it sounds a lot better.

However, I have been wondering whether that 0.7 it states is the volume of the cone itself or the volume of the smallest enclosure that the cone would fit in (if that makes sense!) in which case I'm a dunce. I'm starting to think it's the latter, just need to get some confirmation from Kenwood (the box I got didn't have any spec sheet in it :( )

What height did you make the box to ensure it clears the blind?

6.5" is about all you've got - that gives a little bit for the speaker poking out the top as well.

Of course this assumes you but the sub right at the back of the boot. As the blind slopes upwards, you could make it taller if you put it nearer the end of the boot.

Thanks matt!
Could I possibly trouble you for a guesstimate of the width and length of the boot?

I'm currently designing a sub box, and trying to suss a few things out with out going down to the car with a measure!

I believe the boot is about 45 inches wide (1.15 m)
But I have no idea how long it is!

You lazy git!! I think the width of the boot is about 41 inches (not including the bits where the jack/tyre weld is stored) and about 30 inches in depth, but I strongly suggest you get yer arse out of yer seat & go and measure it!!!

What is important though is the internal volume of the enclosure. Too small or big and it'll sound crap. Each speaker has its own requirements, so make sure you check these up first (learn from my mistakes!!!!)

Lol!
Sorry, that sounded really bad!

Yeah, I'm working using the BlauBox box designer from Blaupunkt... I'm using the proper params for the speaker, and it told me how much volume I needed in the enclosure.
I was then pumping in figures for the lengths of the box to see how I could get the volume right... it was a case of trying to guess how wide and deep the boot was so I could get an idea of guesstimate box sizes.
Obviously I will have to get my lazy ar*e up (damn!) to measure it all before I begin my build!

Thanks for the help though Matt!

By the way, what amp are you using?

I didn't use any software - did it with my head & a bit of paper, however I reckon I may have got it wrong - not entirely my fault though, think the company that sold me the speaker have told me the wrong info :x I'm awaiting the proper specs thou so will let you know!
By the way, what amp are you using?
Some cheapy crap one from maplins - 4 channel, 640W max over all four. By bridging the rear channels I can get about 360W max out of it - bit pants really as the speaker is 1000W max!

However, until I can afford the 320 quid Alpine amp I want it'll have to do!!! It makes enough noise in the right places to be honest, and the filters on it are pretty good.

Out of interest I put the params of your sub into the BlauBox program, and it reckons that the optimal enclosure size for your sub is 0.66 cubic feet.
Of course, the sound quality from that type of enclosure would vary depending on where you drive it (i.e. in a car)...

Interesting stuff!

Yep but does that 0.66 include the volume of the speaker? You may have to add that on....

Pretty sure it does...
Have to check though!

Interesting all the same!

Glad your home built system sounds good... I hope mine does when it's finished!

I´ve been trying for weeks to get my power cable into the engine bay. I saw your picture taken under the glove box today and I went out to my 206CC immidiatly to try and do the same...
I succeded putting in the cabel trough that little hole behind a little plastic plug. But where did the cable go?!? I´ve been trying for hours to see where it f-ing go....?! I Even took the wheel of trying to look that way...but no cable could be seen there...
How did you do? Please help me!

After taking the rubber gromit out, you'll need to drill a hole through the plastic underneath it. The plastic is quite thin so the drill goes through very easily. Then just push the wire through and it'll come out in the engine bay. You can't see the hole in the engine bay directly because there's something in front of it (still don't know what it is - looks like some sort of small motor) but if you keep pushing the wire through it'll eventually pop out above the motor - you might need to stick your hand down the back to help it. Then you just need to run it the short distance to the battery (via a big fuse of course!)

One word of adivce though - ensure that the wire actually goes through your drilled hole in the plastic. If you miss the hole it can curl up in the void between the gromit & the plastic and get lost!!!

OK I finally got the Spec sheet for my speaker through today (only 2 weeks after the speaker itself!!!)

The manual is actually quite good - has lots of information about the enclosure needed for my speaker. Annoyingly enough, it says I need a 0.8 cu ft enclosure which DOES include the speaker itself.

Now, this is what's confused me - I originally had a 1 cu ft enclosure and it sounded crap, so built a 1.5 cu ft one which sounded absolutely loads better, although still not what I expected it would be like.

So my theory now is that the bigger 1.5 is almost twice the size of what is needed (0.8). Do to sound etc maybe this is why it souds OK? And the 1 ft was actually quite a way off what's needed which is why it sounds crap... Any comments from anyone on this?!

Looks like it's back to investigation again!!! Isn't this fun?! :?
