the grinding was more than likely the abs kicking in, when it does the brake pedal does feel funny, it freaked me out the first time in snow last year

That's what ABS does - it's done it on every car I've driven with ABS; Rovers, Vauxhalls, Peugeots.

The ABS system distributes the brake force between the wheels depending on which are about to lock. If there's too much brake pressure for it to distribute without a wheel locking, it has to reduce the pressure. It does this partly by shoving some back out of the system which results in the brake pedal being pushed back.

as everyone else said, its the ABS.

like lyndon i worried the first time it happened then i realised what it was.

a slight grinding noise is more welcome than crashing into a kerb :D

In my 4 hour drive to Bexleyheath from Gillingham yesterday my ABS was working overtime and this morning when I started up I got an ABS Fault message on the display and my ABS light was on for a few mins then everything went back to normal.
