A new tyre and some investigations

Post by Johnnyb60 »

Hi again.
I dropped my car off this afternoon at the local garage to give it a check over.
It's developed a strange random knocking noise coming from the rear end.
It only knocks at low speed and only when I turn a sharp left or right (like when pulling out of a junction)
Their a good bunch of lads at the garage and two of them gave it a good going over and allowed me to also have a good look underneath whilst on the ramp.
To be honest it looked rather good underneath.
No rot or surface rust to be seen, All the heat shields where good, and no fouling of the exhaust.
They then lifted the rear wheels off the ramp to check the dreaded rear axle.
I was starting to feel a little anxious now as I've heard they have a reputation of failing.
They did a good thorough check and to my relief there was no play in it whatsoever.
So the mystery knock is still there (I'll will put it down to just being a French thing)
Up front was the next thing they checked.
Again everything looked good and in order except for a small bulge in the offside tyre wall.
As soon I saw it,I asked them to replace it with a decent branded tyre
Better to be safe than sorry on that front!!!
So I'm still on the hunt for this elusive noise.
I'm now starting to hedge my bets on it coming from the rear brakes as I can hear a similar sound when I have the handbrake on ,and then when I try to rock the car backwards by pushing my foot against the front wheel I can hear a similar noise.
I know this place seems to be very quiet with communication at the moment, but please feel free to give advice.
Surely I'm not the only one who owns a Peugeot 206 cc in this big world we live in.
All the very best,
