Handbrake cable replacement. Easy job?

Post by GazWaz »

Good afternoon all and happy new year.

Got home last night, went to pull the handbrake on and... snap... the lever ended up almost 90 degree up in the air. My car is a 55 1.6 petrol 206cc

The handbrake still holds but I've left it in gear and wheels turned towards the curb should it move. I suspect it's still holding because there are two cables on these 1 each running to the back wheels.

Has anyone done this fix themselves with trolley jack and axle stands. I'm pretty handy with mechanics but this is a job I've never done before. I've seen a youtube clip where a guy does it on a straight 206 but he has the car in the air on one of those posh garage jobbies.

The cables are around £30 for the pair so my thoughts are might as well do both. It looks an easy job but it's all about access with it being on axle stands.

Cheers all

Thanks Col,

I'll have a look at it this weekend. Depending on weather of course. I have a garage but that's reserved for my GSXR 1000

Rightly so. I have my two babies in mine.

BTW. Handbrake cable is less than 1/2 hour including tea!
Cheers Col.
