Reverse Light circuit(?)

Post by George 206cc »

Hi all!

My reverse light used to work fine, then it went through a phase of only occasionally working, then it just stopped working altogether.

The period of only occasionally working means there is a problem not as simple as a blown bulb or fuse because why then would it still occasionally work.

What is the problem likely to be? A sensor somewhere? Some wiring?
Can I fix this myself?

If anyone has any suggestions of what the problem may be, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks, George

It could be the reversing light switch that sits on the gearbox but when mine failed the reversing lights stayed on all the time. A brand new switch from the main dealer was only a few quid and I fitted it myself.

Okay, I'll investigate that. Will let you know how it goes.

Thanks!

Sorry for such a late reply!!

I did eventually investigate this a little while ago but then got very caught up with work. I took out the sensor/switch and found it seemed to be operating normally.

The little button/switch that sits inside the gearbox, in one position with a multi-meter, it gives one reading, in the other position, it gives a different reading. One being joining the circuit, the other being breaking the circuit. So I'm led to believe the sensor/switch is working correctly.

Maybe the problem could be due to a break in a wire or a loose connection somewhere else?

I'm all too keen on paying 9 quid or whatever it is now for a new sensor/switch when it looks like the current one is working fine. Is it a reasonable idea to try and find where the break might be? Or should I just take it to a garage and be done with it?

What are your thoughts?

Thank you!

George

If you've done the checks on the reversing light switch and found it to be working ok then it sounds like a break in a wire or a connection. Are you getting power at the reversing lamp end, and, if so, have you actually tried replacing the bulb?

I haven't tested anything at the lamp end, and haven't tested anything to do with a break in the wire or connections yet. I didn't bother changing the lamp(s) because of the way they failed. I mentioned in my original post, they were working, then they were temperamental, then failed altogether. So it makes me think there's a break in a connection or wire at some point where both reverse lamps are joined, not at each individual lamp.

Perhaps, when they were temperamental, one light fully went, and one remaining was temperamental which could mean the problem is at the lamp end.

I wouldn't know really, hard to see your own reverse lights haha. Tomorrow in the daylight I'll test the lamps and the connections at each lamp.

And also if it would stop raining, that'd be fantastic...
