Maybe it is running too rich. So it might run ok from cold but not when hot.

When was it last properly serviced - date and mileage? What mileage has it done now? What service history have you got?

I'd be checking the air filter to see if that is dirty - if so replace with a new filter element. That should let it breathe properly and stop the engine running too rich. Also, if the spark plugs have done more than 30,000 miles I'd renew them too with ones of the correct specification.

By the way, if it is overdue for a service I'd give it a full service a.s.a.p. The handbook says every 20,000 miles or 2 years which ever comes soonest. But you can't beat a service every 10,000 miles or 12 months whichever comes first. Fresh oil and a genuine oil filter will keep engine wear to a minimum.

And at 13 years old I'd want to know that the cambelt, followers, water pump and coolant had been renewed too. Otherwise everything will stop with a bang when the cambelt breaks.

I take it that it hadn't been done for a while then...

When you book it in, tell them about the problem so they can investigate
