Can't get into gear

Post by JonTheHorrible »

Car - 2004 Peugeot 206cc 1.6l

Hi all! So, I was driving home from work, late the other night, and suddenly I couldnt change gear!!!

I pulled up at the side of the road and turned off the engine.
With the engine off I could move the gearstick and select any gear I liked.
With it on, gears are solidly locked out, I cant move into any gear and I dont get any grinding, with the clutch all the way down or up or in between, the gears are fully not changing, not even a little.

I have a hydraulic clutch and I checked the slave cylinder, it is not leaking and moves fully when I press the pedal. All my fluid levels are good, and I can not figure it out at all. I'm researching my head off at the moment, but most of the info I find relates to 1.6litre 206cc's with cabled clutches. All I can think of so far (and I am not any kind of expert at all!) is that I have smashed my clutch bearing through the clutch (I have been in a lot of Sydney traffic lately and using the clutch instead of neutral) or that the synchromesh has gone. I have no idea what sort of price is involved here and I hope to god it isnt huge!

I was able to get home by starting in 1st with the key and just staying in 1st, luckily it was only 2 miles home.

Can any one please help identify the problem with me? I have my kids on weekends and I can't when I don't have the car. There have been many tears, especially from me, it really sucks.

the only benefit is I have a hayabusa too, so at least I can get from a to b. But the kids wont go on that, their mum would kill me!

If you put your car into first whilst the engine is off, press the clutch then start the car can you use the clutch normally?

Sounds to me like you've lost the use of the clutch, i.e. clutch has failed. So probably new clutch / bearing.

Nah I can start the car but it lurches forward in 1st as the clutch wont disengage. It does not disengage when Im driving either

If your hydraulic fluid levels haven't dropped it sounds to me as if the clutch release bearing has worn through the clutch diaphragm fingers.

Time for a complete new clutch and release bearing.
