MULTIPLEXING - The electronic architecture
If the 206cc was wired conventionally it would require two kilometres of wire and 1,800 connectors - adding considerable weight to the car, and each with a failure potential of its own.

To overcome this problem Peugeot engineers have reduced the number of control units by incorporating Built-in System Interface (BSI) and Multiplex wiring.

The multiplex concept revolves around small electronic modules on various switches and components which recognise and distinguish signals sent down the same wires - saving weight, reducing maintenance and improving reliability.

In addition to simplifying and rationalising onboard electronics, multiplexing improves the efficiency of data exchange between systems and improves management of the entire system's performance.

As well, it reduces service time and cost for Peugeot owners through increased speed and precision of diagnosis.

A VAN (Vehicle Area Network) ensures inter-system connection between the BSI, multi-function display, instrument panel and climate-control air-conditioning.

A CAN (Control Area Network) connects the engine management ECU and the automatic transmission.

is it because its new as the multi whatsit on our 206LX after 5 months caused the electrics to blank out. no fault could be found by peugeot a little worrying when driving along and everything switchs off.

There is long delay between when you hit a switch and when it actually happens. Trying flashing your lights or using your windscren washer jets. There is a delay of a couple of seconds which can be quite annoying.

ah but have you noticed that the washer jets continuing on their own after you've finished pushing them. I think that a cool feature. The only reason there is a delay is because the accessories are on the VAN network and not the immediate CAN.

Does the delay really matter that much?

it can be a bit annoying when you press your horn to get someones attention and they're already past by the time the horn sounds or the same when you're trying to flash someone like a fellow cc'er. Just can be a bit annoying. Was not too impressed with the wiring for the stereo which means that the control adapter for the 2001 model does not work for the 2002 model. And then there was all this trouble trying to find a wire which will work in the acc position etc...

what other new cars use muliplexing other than peugeot?

surely these are all just annonyances rather the not working. Apart from the cutting out all the electrics, that may be a problem !!!

Can't think of any other vehicles that use multiplexing yet, but I'm sure the new VW's use it. I think i read something about them somewhere.

As for the horn delay, drop the roof, drop the speed and cruise past, peugeot assumed you would be posing in the car and didn't think the delay would cause a problem !!

see you all later.

Sounds impressive... ...except that all the 206 CCs built before September 2001 were conventionally wired and the only difference between the two is

a) You get more gizmos with multiplexing.
b) Most garage mechanics can't deal with multiplexed systems.

Once I got over the fact that a one week wait would have gotten me the extras, I'm actually glad I've got a car that doesn't have to be returned to a Peugeot dealer if ever it develops an electronics fault.
Vince. Even allowing for the warranty, I think the 'three men and a dog' repair shop around the corner from me is both cheaper and more reliable but they just don't have the facilities to do multiplex stuff.

Vince.

the 307 also comes with multiplex wiring but does not have this delay that the 206 suffers so surely there is something wrong with the setup. After all the word on the grapevine is Peugeut are scrapping the multiplexing and going back to a conventional wiring system so doesn't that suggest something wrong?
