Whining noise on 1.6 - Belt? Bearing? Gearbox?

Post by m1tch »

Hi all,

My wife's 1.6 has started to make a slight whining noise which increase with speed, I am unsure if its something like a wheel bearing, clutch release bearing or the gearbox itself. I have seen that the gearbox can have issues - can anyone confirm the model of the gearbox so I can research further?

The car has just gone over 77k miles, just wondering if anyone had any ideas as to common issues, the noise is located more on the drivers side which makes me think it's an aux belt issue rather than a gearbox issue but just wanted to ask!

Gearbox is MA5.
Does sound relate to engine speed or road speed? Does it happen stationary? With clutch pedal down?
Cheers Col.
