engine turning over but not starting.

Post by kevindover077 »

Afternoon,
Ive been lurking on here a while and found some great tips. This is my first post so sorry if im in the wrong section.
I have a 2003 206cc 1.6 16v with 99700 miles on the clock.Friday after work drove home 7 miles motorway and town no faults or problems, went to pop out Friday night and when i turned the key the starter sounded jammed just did one click lights all went dim and back bright. The battery is only 2 months old and no problems so far. I was parked on a slight incline so put it in gear and rocked it. That freed up the starter but it turns over but does not fire or attempt to fire.
When i get chance this afternoon i will check the coil pack for sparks.
My question is can a coil pack completly die or does it go over time? If theres no sparks at all could it be the coil pack or am i looking at something different altogether?

Any help will be excellent. :)

I would say that the best way to find out is to get Peugeot Planet onto it.

Is the timing belt intact? At that age and mileage it should have been renewed but perhaps it never has been and has finally given up the ghost?

Because of the coilpack design and position of the plugs they are almost impossible to check. They can fail completely, half the pack fails or just intermittent problems.

Check it isn't loose battery terminals but if spinning over that's unlikely.

NGK plugs and some coilpacks don't work well together.

You should be able to use a standard EOBD diagnostic on that car to see if you have any fault codes showing.

Just because the belts were changed doesn't mean you shouldn't check it ... They don't all last as long as they should and some last a lot longer ...

Check all the connections ... Ecu, coilpack, etc.

Have you opened the key at all? There is a small immobiliser chip and without that the car won't start.

A little update as been busy at work with no daylight time its been half hour here a hour there. I have tested the coil pack that is sparking on all 4 no problem.
I removed the spark plugs and petrol is getting there and it is still not even attempting to try to start.
I know about the spark plugs from here as i got bosch ones when i changed them i noticed the NGK brand.
There is no trouble with the engine turning over battery is still strong. So tomorrow if weather lets me ill try having a look at the cambelt see what contidion its in.

Im not getting on screen faults and i plugged a code reader in and thats all fine too.

Im thinking though it might be electrical somewhere. Any ideas to as next on the list?

Are you using an EOBD code reader? OBDII isn't the same ... so you might find it is simply not telling you.

Peugeot/Citroen seem to be a bit different when it comes to diagnostics ... Almost as if the EU turned a blind eye when they said that they had to be standard across all makes ... Never! ;-)

Hi gazza82 it was a memo scanner u380 read a code off of it before. It says obdII and eobdII on the packaging.
Well hopefully the weathers dry tomorrow so i can try looking at the cam belt. Luckily been borrowing my dads car for the week but i so love the cc so hoping i can get her running again.

No such thing as EOBDII ... It's an enhanced EOBD a bit like the BSI system on the Peugeot.
That's just marketing bull ... Or a Chinese clone and the result of some interesting translation ... It's probably just a badic OBDII reader.

Basically you may get some basic codes but most of the time you get nothing or the code is incorrect.

If the engine isn't firing but turning over something is confusing the ecu as in a sensor or the immobiliser system is on.
