clutch travel/drag 51 plate 1.6 manual 5spd hydraulic

Hi. My daughter has a 51 plate 1.6 with a hydraulically operated clutch which drags. This was standing for about 6 months before she started using it, prior history unknown, about 100k on clock.

I have the procedure for bleeding, and there doesnt seem to be any manual adjustment. Before I try bleeding it, would be really useful to know what the slave travel is supposed to be but i cant track this down. Can anybody point me in the right direction please?

Not sure of travel, but these clutches have a tendency for the release bearing to *cut* through the diaphragm fingers at the tips causing the symptoms you describe.
This is caused by prolonged periods of sitting in gear with clutch down at traffic lights etc:

The clutch hydraulics tend to either work properly or not at all from my experience.

No manual adjustment. It's all done to how well you bleed the system. Can't help on the measurements as our has a cable clutch.

I'd suggest flushing the old fluid completely out so it's all new and fresh (which means doing the brakes too). Brake fluid should get changed every couple of years and as your car has been sat around a while it's likely to have absorbed moisture and won't be as efficient.

With a 14 year old car at that mileage I wouldn't be surprised if the clutch pressure plate is shot. You wouldn't be wasting your money to put a new complete clutch assembly in it if it is intended to keep the car. You could try bleeding it first as Gazza says but I fear that what Col has said will have happened at that mileage. Especially if it has had several owners and urban use.

Thanks very much everybody. My partner has a Fiat seicento, these have the release bearing/diaphram fingers issue too, but hadn't thought of it here .

Funny how when friction materials improve, and springs have longer lives, something else wears to limit life....

Are these hard to change? By which I mean can I do it in the road... my car you have to drop the subframe to get proper access, but I'm afraid I'm completely unfamiliar with 206cc layout. Very rarely see the car...

It's not a bad job. Once you have the battery & tray out (following correct battery disconnection method) you have good access.
Approx 2 hrs on a 2 poster.
