From June this year (2015) you will no longer need to carry around your paper part of the driving licence, in fact you can put it through the shredder.

I never liked carrying both parts, for years the paper part has been in my bedroom draw.

Re: Paper part UK Driving licence at last
Don't think you have ever had to carry the paper part ... The card was enough. My kids have always left them at home
Still I have no choice ... I've still got my original paper one! :-) Never felt it necessary to change especially as they wanted me to pay for the priviledge ...

Like you gazza, I've still got my original paper licence - at least until I'm seventy which is not too far away

With the photo id ones not only do you pay to have them changed, but every ten years they charge another £20 for an updated one.

I wouldn't shred the paper part. If you ever need to hire a car, they need to see the paper part to see if you have any points.
A good friend will come bail you out of jail, but a true friend will be sitting next to you saying..."Damn, that was fun!"

It will no longer be valid after June. No further paper counterparts will be issued. No adjustments to paper counterparts will be made. The paper counter part will no longer be proof of points.

Never take mine out with me, always sits in the file at home.
Also just remember htat if you are going to hire a car, you now need to generate a code from the DVLA site to pass to the hire co to check your status.
Think these are only valid for 3 days as well
