FRONT PASSENGER SIDE KNOCK RATTLE ETC

Post by jaybluecc »

Hi guys, well ive posted on this problem before and did all that was advised, even had a new rear engine mount done as it was in a shocking state, however the problem is still there, basically i have a loud knock, rattle when driving on uneven roads, or speed bumps, which is coming from front passenger side, ive taken it to four garages and they have vigorously tested the front doing everything possible, but cant pin point the problem, this is just a mystery to me, just running out of what it could be, i definitely know its that front wheel area, everything is solid and tight, theres nothing they can find thats loose or anything, any guidance to resolving this issue would be gratefully appreciated.

I can't find any posts about this. only about a handling problem.

If 4 garages can't find the problem when they have the car in front of them, then anyone sitting at a keyboard is going to struggle.

I would check antiroll bar bushes and verticle links as they are known to give rattles when worn. Then it's down to lower arm bushes, balljoints, struts, strut top bushes, then the less obvious like steering rack, subframe fixings, or even a cracked subframe or component, but that would be very rare.
Cheers Col.

This might sound weird and could be completey off mark but I recently sold my soul to identify a similar noise complaint in my girlfriends 206cc.

Same conditions, it would seemingly change also depending on states of acceleration/gears etc, it was really quite inconsistent and difficult to diagnose according to symptoms. It was also coming from passenger side (I'm in a RHD variant but could apply to either).

There are rubber grommets between the car and the bonnet lid which don't appear to be adjustable and prevent bonnet/hood rattle. Mine were worn thin - short of replacing them I just grabbed some adhesive rubber pads and built them up. It was all good after that.

Again, sounds silly and may be totally off the mark but that's what got me. It's weird it sounded like a mechanical problem somewhere but it was something as stupid as this.

Hope that might help, I can take photos and post them if you need.

Cheers

jaybluecc: hope you ordered the correct lower arms ... there are two types. The CC uses the same one as the GTI which has metal/rubber bushes, the other cars have two rubber bushes. The latter last about a week on a CC, especially the 2.0 version ... been there, done that. Changing arms is not fun so you don't want to do it more often that you have too. (Also buy cheap, by twice!)

The other items are listed in Capncol's post ... and I agree with him. Either it's hard to find or they are looking in the wrong place!

Hi gazza i spoke to the bloke before ordering it to make sure it would fit, its just a cheap one to see if it is the problem, if it stops, then i will buy the better one later on.

My method is to carry on using the car till something falls off then by looking in your rear mirror you can see what it was.

I am voting on exhaust.

So an update, replaced the suspension arm and the problem sorted! No more knocks or bangs, the old arm ball joint was worn and very loose, so job done, and only took less than an hour to do it!
