Hissing sound

Post by Rebecca52 »

Hello

I'm hoping for some advice...

Had my 2002 Peugeot cc just over 2 weeks. The 12 month MOT is starting to show discrepancies and I'm now worried as to how deep this goes!

The latest worry I have is a hissing noise coming every now and again from the passenger side. I have been searching on various forums and it looks likely to be the servo?! Now, I have no idea what this is, but is it something that would be highlighted in an MOT? There is also a high pitch noise that I think is related to the brakes. I can't decide if it is a squeak or a sort of beep the car is deliberately making to alert of a problem?

Sorry, I know this is making me look a real moron! I had the most basic fiesta previous to this and am feeling a bit bewildered! Would appreciate any help or thoughts! Thanks

The latest worry I have is a hissing noise coming every now and again from the passenger side. I have been searching on various forums and it looks likely to be the servo?! Could be many things causing brake squeek, from dust build up to glazed pads

The hiss will be the servo which provides power assistance to your brakes. If the braking performance is ok I wouldn't worry .

Brake squeal is a commonly reported issue and can vary depending on the brand of discs and pads used. Just make sure that your brake pads are not worn to below the minimum thickness (2mm front / 1.5mm rear). When renewing brake pads I always give a light coat of copaslip grease to the backing plate which usually helps stop brake squeal. Be careful not to get any grease on the friction material or the discs though.

What are the MOT discrepancies?

MOT's are not an indication of mechanical soundness but a test of road worthiness within limits. There used to be a time you did not need an engine in a car to pass an MOT.
Your vehicle can pass an MOT and within a week something may have deteriorated passed the specified limits but at the time of the test, it was a pass.
Instead of relying on MOT as a guide take your car to a garage for an inspection.
