New Remote Keys

Post by laddie8989 »

I'm asking for some information as I'm not a mechanic. My local dealers all have different prices, they seem reluctant to answer me unless they see the actual car/keys....and Peugeot UK say they have no one who can tell me!
It's about a Peugeot 206 on a 2003 plate (still a nice runner with low mileage).
The buttons on the casing of both of the two door/ignition keys are collapsing...but just about still operate at present.
I'm thinking of getting two new ones...but I don't know what work the dealer has to do in order to enable both new keys to operate like the old ones.
Does any work need to be done either inside the vehicle or engine?
Someone has mentioned that Peugeot themselves have to be contacted during the process. If so what do they do, and do they normally charge a fee to the dealer who hands it onto me in the bill?

I get suspicious when dealers won't answer what I think are basic questions, and I have been ripped off with another vehicle in the past when I was charged for work/parts that I later found hadn't been done.
Does anyone know if there's a way I can verify that the dealer has done the work I've paid for, and not just put an new casing around the old key and whatever else is inside.

If they have to reprogram the new car/keys....can I verify this with anyone?

Cheers for reading this.

My uncle had this problem. All I did was buy a new casing off eBay for £3.70, took the old key and new casing apart, and replaced the old side with the broken buttons with the identical side off the new casing. The rest of the innards (pcb and chip) stayed in the old casing with the metal blade as that side was not too bad. I replaced the battery with a new one while I was at it. If you do it quickly it won't lose its memory and there'll be no need for any re-programming.

Make sure you get the correct type of casing off eBay, they normally show photos in the ads.

e.g. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/220898868363

The battery was a CR2016 which cost very little off eBay too.

The key has to be coded to the cars imobiliser and the BSI for the remote. There are others other that Peugeot that can do it. If you put your location up, someone might be able to give you someone local to try.

I'm surprised Peugeot won't give you a fixed price for the work.
Cheers Col.

You'll need the key code. Might be in handbook otherwise I'd recommend a guy on 206info.co.uk ... Peugeot charge a fortune.

But try new cases first ... No programming necessary. Just don't forget/lose chip(s).

Transfered my old key blade and chip/battery to new casing with no problems.
Also new key cut at Timpsons for £70. This was key only....no remote unit/fob.

There is no reason why the solution wouldn't work for you if both of your keys are already working. If you did take too long in renewing the batteries and your keys thus needed to be reprogrammed it is all explained how to do this on page 69 of the owners manual:
- Switch off the ignition
- Switch the ignition on again
- Press button A (the larger button)
- Switch off the ignition and remove the remote control key from the ignition lock. The remote control will now be working again.

Thanks to all who have provided info. I've only just started, and only checked Peugeot Garages so far. I have been given brief verbal quotes for new keys only. All different, even though the work must be the same. One quoted £200 per key.....staggering.
I do appreciate the info about possible casing replacements.....but if I do have to get 2 new remote keys I wanted to know in more detail how the work is done i.e. how do you code a key to the vehicles immobiliser and the BSI for the remote? What does a garage have to do?

Does the chip (or whatever is inside the key casing) have any recognisable number or code?
I'm reluctant to open a key up just in case I can't put it back together.
Sorry to be long winded but if I do go to a garage I want to be able to check that the works been done and that they've not just put everything in a new casings.

Cheers for the patience.

Is it all done in house....or

Forget the last bit...basically I wanted to know how a garage/dealer does things.....all in house or do they involve a third party i.e. Peugeot UK?

They reset the BSI system to recognise the new keys.

No. But the signal it gives is unique. Contact Lee on 206info.co.uk who can provide a new chip for a lot less than a Peugeot dealer. He'll need your VIN number and a small donation.

Just clips together ... unless the case is that badly broken, then you need a new case anyway. Lever it open gently with the edge of a one pence coin. You have to do this to change the batteries anyway.

That's easy to tell ... the keys don't open the doors or start the car if they haven't been reprogrammed.

The main issue is not the case, not the immobiliser chip and not the programming. It's getting or finding the exact same circuit board as the current key .. there are several different types and ebay sellers don't and won't care about selling the wrong ones.

Have you tried a local home security shop that sell keys, safes, locks, ? Not Timpsons, etc ... Most of these guys have branched out to do car keys as it's lucrative business! But they are still a lot cheaper that Peugeot.

Thanks for all info to date. Appreciate that keys wouldn't operate car if work not done, but still wondering if anyone knows how the dealer does it?

What reprogram them? Yes. Using PP2000 ...

I think he must have "bottled" it. Didn't let us know the outcome...
