ABS Light On/Off Back on after short drive

Post by Phaeton »

So managed to change the clutch thanks for comments, put 2x new reluctor rings on the front hubs & hoped it was job done, unfortunately not. tried to search but there wasn't a lot of help out there.

So sequence is switch ignition on, ABS light comes on, stays on for 5-10 seconds & then goes off, then drive down road get to approx 20mph & it comes back on until you switch on/off again.

Am I correct in thinking that as it comes on & back off again that it can see all four sensors, but when it gets to 20mph it can't see one of the wheels spinning so put up a fault. When I put the reluctor rings on the front I did try to align them with the sensors, can the sensors be adjusted?

I don't have a code reader is there any other way to find out which one it can't see?

I did find a post on another forum that suggested that if the rear pads were worn the ABS light could come on, is this likely or a red herring?

Last point ... Red herring.

Our CC rear pads were shot when we got it. Almost worn to metal. No ABS light.

Are you sure the relucters had the same number of teeth as the old one? Wrong number of teeth would cause this
I don't have a code reader is there any other way to find out which one it can't see? Good code reader would tell you for sure

Thanks Guys, pretty sure I put one of the new rings on top of an old ring & they were the same, PIA now as they are fitted without having to take one back off. The offside pickup still has some gunge on it from the spilt boot so first thing is to clean that off.

Can you recommend a decent, not silly expensive reader, have to be a hand-held as I would imagine all PC based ones are Windows & I don't have access to it, only Linux & Mac.

So took it down to the local garage & he put his unit on it, it had 2 faults, speed sensor & pump, he cleared them off & I took it down the road. The light came back, so read them again this time only the ABS pump came up, is this fixable or am I looking at a replacement, if replacement what's involved never had to work on ABS before.

Just to keep the post upto date incase it helps somebody in the future, changed the ABS pump & now everything is fine, fairly simple job to do, had to move the headlight forward slightly, undo the 3 bolts & 6 pipes. Replace the opposite way & then bleed the brakes.

Well done Alan - thanks for the feedback.

Incidentally, it is recommended to renew brake/clutch fluid every couple of years to help avoid corrosion in the hydraulics system.
