Newbie Question : General

Post by fbs1000 »

Morning all,

Hope everyone is well ?

Just brought the Wife a 206cc - 56 plate for an amazing price off a friend. £650 :-)

It's in fantastic condition and very happy with it. Only issue/s :

(1) I have is a knock coming from the left wheel, Is there a common issue with Ball-Joints, Drop links etc etc on these cars?

(2) Also, anyone know where I can get the heatproof / sound proof for under the bonnet (This is missing)

(3) Finally, the gear stick seems to be pretty lose (Very wayward) is there a bolt I can tighten up, or is this a sign of a faulty gearbox? - Will draining and putting in new gearbox fluid help

Thanks in advance guys :-)....

1. Possibly the bottom suspension arm lower balljoint (new arm but make sure it's the GTi version .. the standard ones last about a week).

2. Scrap yard? All these are the same. Are the small push-in plastic mounting pins still there if not fleabay for a pack.

3. Most likely the bushes. Haven't found a bolt to tighten this, but have lost the gears when a pin fell out of our HDi leaving us with 1st, 3rd and 5th. Check at the gear box linkages first ...

Draining and refilling won't help the gear lever but will probably be a good move as it will never have been done except if it's had new clutch (or gearbox!).

Cheers Gazza, Great response mate :-)

As for (3) Do you mean the Gear Linkage ? I've seen on Fleabay there about £20, Are they pretty easy to fit mate?. IE : Please dont tell me you need to take the exhaust, heat shield etc etc off to get to them :-)

Thanks again for a great response mate.

I personally would never buy car parts from ebay.
Unless there was a manufacturers name, how would you know if it was a good quality / CE marked product, and not some Chinese junk?
What about warranty? What if it doesn't fit, or if two left arms sent instead of one of each, or some other problem?

I think you have 30 or maybe 60 days where ebay will get involved with a dispute, after that you have to rely on the sellers goodwill, and post parts back to wherever they are.
Rather deal with a local autofactors myself.

Don't forget, if you do have a problem, the car is off the road until sorted.
Cheers Col.
