I have a Peugeot 206 1.4 LX Auto, 2002, build 4260. It has now been sitting outside my house for the last 2 months and I cannot get it to start. Here’s the history:
A lovely car that ran well, but it started to pink after reaching 65-70 degrees. Fully warmed up (89-90) it got worse, then eventually started to miss fire i.e. would die for a split second or so when driving, but recover and carry on as normal. I read that if the temperature thermostat was faulty, the ECU would give the wrong fuel mixture, so I changed the cooling sensor stat. No difference. One morning, the car wouldn’t start at all. It turns over fine, but will not fire up. Now it is in Eco-Mode. This is when all my troubles started.
I changed the battery for a new one, as it wasn’t holding charge well and looked rather old. I reconnected the new one, observing the proper BSI start up procedures. Then I also changed the following:
Coil Pack
Idle Stepper Motor (I discovered the original was unplugged so figured it was faulty anyway)
The RAC came out on the Sunday evening, but the “very, very, nice man” couldn’t fix it and diagnosed the Crankshaft sensor was faulty. I changed that next day. No difference, it still wouldn’t start. (There’s no camshaft sensor on this model apparently.)
So, I purchased an old XP laptop and PP200 with Diagbox from fleabay. Having (eventually) got it all working, I ran the global tests. I find that there are “no faults found” on all systems/ECU’s….EXCEPT in the automatic transmission ECU. This gives a fault code of 22, plus another failure that there’s no rotation from the engine. I can’t remember the details but wrote it off, as the engine isn’t running anyway. There is no data from the Transmission ECU at all, (i.e. all fields blank) which makes me think there is no power to it. Running detailed tests on the engine ECU reveals that the injectors are all working, the plugs are all sparking, the fuel pump is working, there is fuel pressure at the rail and the engine ECU all checks out fine. It’s not locked, the key is recognized, immobilizer is not active and the BSI unit reports no faults. I’ve spent all day examining the wiring, carrying out earth checks but found nothing untoward. I’ve also previously checked all the fuses in the BSI and under bonnet fuse boxes. They are all fine.
Can anyone please tell me if the auto transmission ECU wasn’t working, would this stop the engine ECU from starting the car?
Also, can anyone advise me how to check the power supply to the Automatic transmission ECU unit (SAGEM 2000 system) I don’t have any wiring diagrams and the Haynes manual is rather lacking on electrical detail.
I guess the moral to my sad story, is to have taken it to the dealers in the first place. Unfortunately, I’m not that well off and can’t afford their prices. They wouldn’t even come out to my house for a diagnostic, neither would the local independent guy either. So I’m in the doo-doo.
I would be really grateful if someone could help me out with some diagnostic or constructive advice. Thanks for reading. David
