everything goes out, starter replaced engine manage light on

Post by tonyholbury »

Sorry about the long title, people like to get an idea of a problem from the title.
My son in law was driving at night, he said everything went off and the engine cut out but restarted due to his forward motion, the starter which had been making a zing noise when starting failed to start.
I recovered the car, found power to the energising wire, replaced the starter, it started alls well.
Next day he drove ten miles to work, halfway home the engine management light came on and has stayed on, would rebooting the BSI cure this and turn off the light or does the system have to be cycled a few times to 'relearn'??
Its a Y reg 206 1.4 LX.

Tony or 'dad the mechanic' if you please

The engine management light will stay on until the cause has been cleared. If the fault has been sorted, it can take a while for the light to go off by itself. A good code reader will clear it and the stored fault code instantly. I wouldn't recommend resetting the BSI.

I've never used an ELM3277 and had to google it.
I guess it's cheap enough to chuck it away if it doesn't work. On the other hand you get what you pay for. Someone else may have used one and may comment. If you can get the codes and need some help post them here.
Cheers Col.

Tried all sorts on my Pugs ... only thing that is reliable is PP2000 with a Lexia-3 cable (PC software) but I can get some codes from my Sealey code reader ... but that wasn't cheap at over £200!

ELM327 is the cable and interface ... the question is what is on the other end reading and interpreting the codes ... that is what makes the difference ... you should look for something that uses the EOBD protocol (European) but Peugeot and others didn't switch all cars to it at the same time (petrol engines should have been from Sept 2000). OBD-II might work but it's a US version ... or it may appear to work, but the codes it returns are simply wrong!
