Battery, electrics, my sanity???

Hi all, brand new here and not very technical minded so be gentle!

I have an 02 plate 206 cc 2.0 which I love to bits.

When I turn the ignition off and remove the key the battery light stays illuminated and the clock/radio panel stays illuminated with the radio staying on. I tried putting the key back in the ignition and switching it all on and then off again but then the same happens but this time it's all flickering on and off and there is a clicking sound accompanying it which sounds like when you turn the key to position 1.

My sister used to own a pug and, as I know nothing about cars, she took a look and disconnected the battery, left it for a while, reconnected it and it was fine. This afternoon I came back from work and it's started doing it again.

Any ideas, help, suggestions or vodka would be very much appreciated right now as I don't want it to kill my battery and I have to use the car for a lengthy journey tonight.

Have you owned this car long?

It sounds like your battery is on its way out. Any idea how long its been on the car?

Trouble is at this time of year, when you need lights on and wipers going all the time, any weak battery problem gets worse very quickly. Going on a long journey may help to recharge it, but if I were you I'd get that battery checked asap.

Hopefully you have breakdown cover just in case.

Where-abouts are you? I can recommend some garages in the Guildford area for testing the battery, I'd avoid the national chains as all they will do is say you need a new battery regardless.

I'm wondering if it's the ignition switch. Even if the battery was starting to fail, there shouldn't be an ignition light with the key removed.

Thanks for your help. I'm in Leicestershire so Guidfords a bit of a way for me. I've had the car since August last year, bought privately but with full service history etc. Tonight the engine coolant warning decided to rear its ugly head so had to wait on the hard shoulder til it calmed itself down.

Tomorrow will be my first bus journey in years, wish me luck!

I would say get the Battery and Alternator checked, A battery light showing with the ignition off can mean the diode in the Alternator has failed, which will lead to a flat battery.
