Gearbox repair

I collected this car on Friday night and knew there was trouble in the gearbox as soon as I drove it. After stripping the box, the damaged bearing was easy to spot, though why they put the smallest bearing nearest to 1st gear ( the one with the most torque) I don't know.
The bearing fits on the lower shaft in the picture, next to the smallest gear. The splines at the end fit through the casing and into the clutch.

Quick update, the parts took longer to arrive due to the xmas post. Rebuilt the gearbox on Thursday night and refitted to the car - by myself! I refitted everything else today and road tested it, with no abnormal noises. The total cost was £16 for the bearing and seal, and £18 for 2 ltrs of gear oil.
There's a few other small things that need done before i start using it... Roll on the summer!

Way to do it mate, keep well away from main dealers, do it yourself and motoring can be cheap (ish) :) .

Good wee yard just along the road from you, Alloa Autobreakers, plenty 206 in there. ;)

Wow, that's good going, well done rfman!
I've never attempted a gearbox repair - the only time I was faced with a gearbox problem I took the easy(er) option and swapped the entire box. But that was on a Cavalier many years ago, and access was pretty easy.
With that chunky sub-frame underneath it looks like a bit of an ordeal getting the box out. Am I right in thinking that you have to get all the intake pipework and battery tray out the way, then (after the usual fight with driveshafts and bell housing bolts) the box lifts out the top?
