Car Struggles to start.

Post by CAROLINE1973 »

Hiya.
Thankyou for taking the time to read this as its my first post asking for help.
I have a 2001 Peugeot 206. 1.4LX Automatic. Have had a few niggles with her before, mainly new brake pads, replaced the cv joints and the fan doesnt cool the engine (had a really bad noise one day when i was sat with the car running whilst waiting for my son).
Took the car to the mechanic and he said since i only do short journeys, not at rush hour that it only overheated because i left the engine running whilst stationary, hence the engine is always turned off now if waiting.

My problem now is, for the last week or so, when i go to start the car (usually in the morning). It starts fine, but then cuts out immediately, (I dont know if this is related or not, but if the radio lights up straight away, i know the car is not going to cut out.) If the radio doesnt light up, i have to put my foot on the accelerator and revv it a little, it seems to be ok.

I would really appreciate any help or advice.
Thankyou
Caroline.

Hi Caroline and welcome.
The fan cuts in when engine temp reaches approx 90 deg. If you are moving, you have natural airflow through the radiator. so it won't be needed.
Your cutting out problem may well be tired battery, or lazy alternator.
Cheers Col.

So it could be the battery?? how long do they last? also Im a complete novice when it comes to cars, and the chap i bought it off in November said it had a service, but im not too sure. Would you advise me to get it serviced.?

3-4 years is average, although some do last a bit longer.
If you are not sure of previous history then yes, get it serviced.
Cheers Col.
