Key fob not working, alarm going off, car won't start

Post by Schofield117 »

I posted this in Problems-Electrical, but thought I would post here also.

Hello,

I found the below post from last year by Ballso, and this morning I have had the same problem. My Peugeot 206 (03 Reg) would not open with the key fob, so I opened the door using the key which sets off the alarm. I turned the key in the ignition but there was nothing, the car wouldn't start. The alarm stopped a few times and then restarted, but eventually stopped!

If Ballso is still around on here, I wondered whether changing the battery in your key fob did in fact solve the problem? I am going to try that later, but I don't understand why that would stop the car from starting.

Any other advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi all,

I've just been out to the car and I noticed when I tried to remotely unlock it via the key fob (old style, two buttons, no LED) that nothing happened. I thought I might've left it unlocked, but nope. I manually unlocked the car and the alarm starting going off, so I put the keys into the ignition and turned to de-activate it. Then I tried to start the car to no avail, there is just no response. Occasionally, the dash lights might come on, but then they go off and I still can't start the car. Tried several times of locking, then unlocking the car and each time the alarm has gone off and I've had to deactivate it.

I've had to leave the car as it is and have manually locked it (after several times of the alarm going off again intermittently). I'm non plussed as to what is going on. It's never happened before, and the car was used yesterday and the key fob worked and everything.

Can anyone suggest what the issue might be?Ballso

I've had the car for about 4 years and I'm sure it had a new battery just before I bought it. But I don't know how long car batteries last. I'm just about to change the key fob battery to see if that changes anything.

It is easy to lose the chip out of the key when you change the battery. If you lose the chip the car won't recognise the key and won't start. Is the chip still in it?

The chip is still in as I couldn't even get the screw out of the keys in order to change the batteries, the screws were worn away. I'm wondering whether it is the car battery that is at fault, as it seems unlikely for both key fob batteries to stop workin at the same time.

The original battery on our 206cc lasted 8 years before the spurious messages etc started. Replaced it recently and everything back to normal now. Didn't stop the car unlocking on the fob though, but it did cause the car to lock when the starter motor was operated. Had to unlock it using the red button inside the car once the engine was running. That was how I knew the car battery was at the end of its life.

Battery life varies according to type and quality. While the originals tend to last years ... replacements last half the time.
