Engine shaking
Hi,
I was saying the other day I'm starting to get a few problems with my cc,
Well on Saturday I was driving and smoke was coming from under the bonnet, I pulled in and popped up
The bonnet to see my oil cap was gone and oil was every where! I got it home spent a good hour cleaning
the mess, topped up with more oil and ordered a new oil cap. So today I went out to start it and the engine and gear knob are shaking pretty violently then engine management light came on. I found it a bit scary so turned off egnition. Is my wee car totally gubbed?

Re: Engine shaking
Without seeing and hearing it myself, it's a tricky one. How much oil did you loose? Was there any knocking noises coming from the engine?
When you cleaned it, what did you use? Water?

Hi,
Oh the oil was every where! I lost alot of oil, I didn't use any water, I just used loads of spamspam roll mopping it all up! There was no knocking noise. I'm terrified to turn it back on!

spamspam - roll.
The spam filter won't allow that word as we had a spate of spam from spamspam fitting companies.
I suspect you have filled the spark plug recesses with oil which may be causing the problem. Have you checked the level on the dipstick?

Re: Engine shaking
Firstly check oil level and make sure it's not overfilled. If it's between max & min with no knocking noises you will probably be ok to drive it. What engine is it?
Cheers Col.

Re: Engine shaking
It's a 2 ltr engine, if it starts knocking I'm best not to drive it? And knocking u mean rattling about? Cause it was vibrating pretty viciously!

Re: Engine shaking
By knocking Capncol means a loud rattling noise which would indicate serious damage to the big-end bearings through oil starvation. If you have that then turn the engine off. However, the shaking (or rattling about) that you describe is more indicative of the engine not firing on all cylinders (probably because of oil contamination to the coil pack and spark plugs). If the engine is firing on less than all 4 cylinders then it will be out of balance and may shake quite violently and you may find that it will lack sufficient power to get it to a garage. If you have breakdown cover including home, then it is worth ringing the RAC or AA or GreenFlag if you are with one of them. Or get you local garage to come out and recover the car. You really need to remove the top cover from the engine (4 torx screws) to see the condition of the coil pack. If it is oily it will need cleaning. By removing the coil pack you will then be able to see the extent of oil contamination in the spark plug recesses. This oil will cause misfiring but is not terminal as far as your engine is concerned. Cleaned up you may find that the coil pack and spark plugs function normally. If not a new coil pack and the correct Bosch plugs should not break the bank hopefully.

Re: Engine shaking
Hi guys,
Thks for your help, I haven't dealt with the car this week just because of work
but I've taken a wee video of the car on today, the engine dosent seem to be shaking quite so hard but the gear stick is and so is the drivers seat, I also checked the oil level again today and it is above the full line so I think I've now topped up too much. Engine management light is still on. How can I post my videos to show you?? Thks Sarah

Re: Engine shaking
If you have it on you tube, post the link. How many mm above the max is the oil?
Cheers Col.

Re: Engine shaking
Hi, I'm just taking the car to a mechanic, started the car and driven it for two mins when catalyic convertor fault has appeared, is this something else on top of the the possibility of new soars plugs and coil pack?? I've also checked oil level today and its right at the top of the marker so maybey I read it wrong the other day.
Oh I'm going out if my mind! Can I drive it to the garage do you think??
