misfiring 206 1.4 lx auto petrol..52 plate

Post by thehawkandnat »

Hi,
my car is used every day for minor journeys.
It passed m.o.t in January..needed wishbones at front.
anyways it started misfiring yesterday..engine management light was flashing..and it was beeping(still is)
I replaced the spark plugs..put in bosch super plus
problem still exists. :( although she has more of a pull)

management light is on permanent(not flashing)
heard it could be the coil pack ..but mine looks mint :?

when i give her the gun ..it sometimes briefly clears(stops mis-firing)..and goes like a dream for a little while, then it starts misfiring again????

also heard it could be fuel injectors being blocked...or bad fuel? :o

any advice welcome..

also don't know if its in any way linked but my speedo sometimes sticks at 0 ..i just switch car off and back on..it works! ;)

car is automatic not manual..but think it could have been converted prior to me owning it as it was originally registered as a manual?

Unless you filled up somewhere different and / or the problem started just after filling up, it is unlikely to be fuel. Injectors do sometimes go faulty but it is most likely the coil pack (you can't go by looks alone) I have changed loads of them.
Speedo is unrelated to missfire.

Welcome to the forum by the way.
Cheers Col.

put fuel in on Friday..never really used the car over the weekend.
Monday morning ..problem started.
a mate fueled up at same garage last week, he had same problem(hence my thoughts regarding fuel)
I have now unconnected the fuel sensor..when plugged back in there was a rush of air noise!
repeated this twice more..no rush of air on last time of doing this?
would running it through diagnostics..(ie part service)..give me more of a clue
not got much cash..got arthritis in back ..working on this car ain't helping ..and not much i can physically do myself eitheir

would the coil pack problem result in the engine management light illuminating(flashing) and a god damn annoying bleeping noise?
the coilpack in it is a sagem..if that helps?

Well it sounds as if it could be fuel related bearing in mind you know someone else with the same issues.
Sorry, don't know what you mean by "fuel sensor".
A short service doesn't usually include diagnostics, and probably won't cure the problem.

If I were you I would try and get through the fuel you have getting as low as poss, then fill it up from a non supermarket outlet such as Shell, or BP, and you may find the fault *goes away*. If this doesn't sort it then a bit more of an in depth look is required. Once the fault has cleared (whatever it is) The MIL light will stop flashing.

cheers ,my mate said to put fuel in elsewhere and put in a drop of red-ex!
i tried this..and now its got crazy erratic revs..going up and down at its own will.
blooming annoying as it just cost over 600 quid to get it through the M.O.T Only 6 weeks ago..there were NO PROBLEMS WITH THE EMISSIONS it was spot on and actually very good for the age?
this problem just came out of the blue..no creeping up on me
hoping it is a simple fault..like the coil pack..and not another massive expense

Coil pack won't cause "crazy erratic revs..going up and down at its own will"
Is it still misfiring?
Did you listen for an air leak? (hissing noise)

How much (bad) fuel did you originally put in?
Cheers Col.

no air leak...put another £30 fuel in today at an independent garage..(one which does not use additives!)
It seems slightly more responsive..yet still misfiring, but not as lumpy..starting to think its the cat (aaaaaaaaaarrrrrr)
stopped bleeping though..now has a fixed engine management light..on constantly
still hoping it is the fuel issue..and will rectify itself(or not cost much to fix)
will keep you all posted on it ..and fingers crossed!
