Help my car is dying :(

Post by neveroutfoxed »

Hi,

New to all this forum business so forgive me if I'm not quite upto date with the etiquette, but I'm having a lot of problems with my 2.0 litre Peugeot 206 cc.

The car had a considerable amount of work done on it costing £1250 in September yet came out of the garage less predictable than it went in.

The work it had done:

1 Tyre
1 Injector
Driver side front wishbone
exhaust rear and middle
ABS rings
Radiator replaced

List of problems:

* The car thinks it is overheating even when it isn't
* It revs uncontrollably when in neutral and consumes a massive amount more petrol as a result
* Upon turning the car on I get "Catalytic converter fault" "Air Pollution fault" and some others flashing up at me
* The car randomly chooses whether it wants to start or not
* If it starts it either starts straight away and works perfectly for the entire journey or is jumpy, over revving and cutting out in the middle of the road
* It overheats if sitting if stationery for more than one minute
* Continues to complain that my oil pressure is too low

Can anybody help?

Thanks

* The car randomly chooses whether it wants to start or not Meaning.....?
* If it starts it either starts straight away and works perfectly for the entire journey or is jumpy, over revving and cutting out in the middle of the road Air leaks can cause this too or a missfire

Also check all the engine earth wires are clean and tight bad earths can cause false signals to ecu. As yours is a "Plexed" pug (BSI) the other thing to consider is the age of the battery. Search this site for random faults such as yours down to a failing battery. If it's over 3-4 years old, consider changing it.

If you find nothing wrong, I would take it to a good independent garage and get it on a diagnostic machine to get any fault codes, and also look at live data specifically o2 readings
Post results here. OK? Good luck
Cheers Col.

Hi Capncol,

Thanks for the reply!

questions answered below:

* The car thinks it is overheating even when it isn't How have you proved that? Could be the temp sensor faulty

Because the stop engine light and engine coolant temp too high warnings show as soon as I start the car, even when it was -3 degrees the other day, I believe this is down to a faulty temp valve so I shall look into this thanks.

* The car randomly chooses whether it wants to start or not - Meaning.....?

Sometimes the car starts at the first turn off the key, sometimes it chugs and then cuts out and sometimes it starts and then cuts out straight away

* It overheats if sitting if stationery for more than one minute You said it's not overheating???

It thinks it's overheating at start up when it couldn't possibly be but does overheat very quickly in traffic and steam comes from under the hood and doesn't stop until about 10 minutes after the car has been stopped.

I will look into the possibility of air leaks thanks, it's also coming up with ESP/ASR not functioning, any ideas?

oh and the battery was replaced last year.

Did these faults start as soon as battery replaced or sometime later?
I'm starting to suspect ecu. Check all the earth wires first. If you can't find anything, diagnostic machine next.
Cheers Col.
